Being Rapunzel's Serious Body Guard Would Include...
Request: HVKENCKDNCDK MOONY I HAVE AN AWESOME IDEA Headcanons on being Princess Rapunzel’s personal body guard and the bodyguard has a really serious attitude. Like they don’t care for “fun” things but Rapunzel ropes them into it anyway and the bodyguard’s happy and fun personality slowly starts to show through thanks to Rapunzel’s influence on them
It wasn't that you didn't like fun, you loved fun
But there was a time and place to be fun, and that time and place was not while you were in charge of the wellbeing of the princess
You always had to be on alert, making sure nothing got past you because if something did... well, the King would surely fire you
Rapunzel, however, didn't seem to get the memo
From the moment you were appointed to her, she was obsessed with making you smile and laugh
She would make you things (paint you pictures, sew things, etc) just to try and get you to smile
While you were thankful for the gifts, you never relented
Smiling would surely be seen as a weakness to any enemies nearby planning to attack the princess
When that didn't work she tried a new approach; baking
You had to admit she was determined and she also made some damn good pastries
But still, you refused to let yourself go
One day, while you were off duty (Rapunzel was with Eugene and her handmaiden, Cassandra. She didn't need you on days spent with them), you overheard a conversation between her and her friends
"I just don't understand... Is (Y/n) not a fan of me? Do they hate me?"
Rapunzel sounded really disappointed at the idea of someone not liking her
You were baffled, of course that wasn't it at all! You loved Rapunzel!
"Listen, Raps, don't take it personally. I've never even heard them speak, I'm surprised they've accepted all of your gifts."
That stung, of course it would come from Cassandra
You had always been rather quiet, but guarding didn't really require talking that much so you just never did it unless you needed to confer with other guards
"I don't know, they scare me... something about that piercing glare..."
You could imagine Eugene shivering as he said it and your heart dropped into your stomach
Were you really so weird??
The next time you were on guard duty, you made it a point to respond to Rapunzel with more than just one word answers
She seemed to really enjoy hearing your voice and the two of you ended up holding up a really good conversation
You even threw in a few chuckles
As the two of you split up for the night, her back to her chambers, you off to your own, she grabbed your wrist
"It was really nice to talk to you tonight, (Y/n). I hope some day we can be friends."
She met your eyes and you actually felt your eyes water slightly
Maybe you could make an exception to the serious attitude, for her
"I'd like that." You tell her.
She says good night and as you turn the corner, you hear a squeal and a "YES!" from behind you
What about yandere Eugene (from Rapunzel) headcannons? Like after he married Rapunzel but she dies or something? Or whatever it’s up to you my dude 😩❤️
Eugene
* Eugene would be a charming yandere. He knows the effect he has on people and he would use his own charms to try and get you. I mean, if he has such a powerful weapon, he might as well use it to get what he wants.
* If you would reject him, Eugene wouldn't give up that easily. Though, he would be less passive and more aggressive with his approach. Maybe that would attract you more!
talk to me about the lingering effects of Rapunzel's trauma
I love this question! My answer is longgggg
First of all, I’ve touched on a few elements of Rapunzel’s trauma in my fanfic “Blossoming Jealousy”:
“Like when the handmaidens had tried to brush her choppy cap of hair for her, and she’d cried because that was supposed to be a mother’s job, but her new mother hadn’t even offered--obviously because her hair wasn’t special anymore, so of course the Queen didn’t love her, because if she did why hadn’t she come to do it herself? Or when she’d tied her bedsheets together and rappelled from her bedroom window, giving them both a heart attack, because she’d wanted to visit her friends at the Snuggly Duckling and hadn’t realized that as long as she brought a chaperone, they would freely give their permission for her to roam the kingdom as she wished. Or the night they had tried to make her feel more comfortable by having her favorite: hazelnut soup. Despite the chef’s attempts to replicate the recipe, Rapunzel had cheerfully remarked, “It tastes so much different than Mother’s!”
Of course there's the dangers of information and sensory overload and dealing with the pressure of succeeding at everything because she’s desperate to be liked and viewed as a “worthy” queen and daughter, especially because she’s already good at so many things (baking, knitting, sewing, paper mache, music, chess, you name it). After all, it’s hard to unlearn the concept of conditional love that Gothel clearly hammered into her brain.
Social interaction of course, and not just learning the nuances of love languages and sarcasm and the different ways to show you care (as we see in the show’s plotlines about her & Cassandra or Monty). I think the most egregious lingering effect of her trauma in this case would be understanding the grey areas of what makes people good and bad. Yes, Gothel was lying about a lot of things, and the world/other people aren’t all bad. But then again, some of what Gothel said is true--there are some people who existed in the Tangled universe who, had they heard about Rapunzel’s magic hair, would have tried to kidnap her and sell it--Stabbingtons, anyone? Rapunzel tries to see the good in everyone, so this might be hard for her to comprehend at first. Also, Gothel herself was able to manipulate Rapunzel by appearing loving and caring at times--I think Rapunzel would find it overwhelming to study those nuances of human behavior. While there are bad people in the world, some can look like good people and do things that may seem “good” for bad reasons. Granted, I think she does understand the flip side of this concept (that some people might do bad things that hurt people but not necessarily BE bad people) thanks to Eugene being so open about his past as a thief. I think this confusing concept may have contributed to her troubles with Cass, as Cass is definitely a character whose morality runs more grey than black and white.
On a different topic, I think a lot about how difficult it must be to unlearn what Gothel taught her a parent-child relationship should be, especially since Rapunzel is technically an adult. Her parents want to establish boundaries and rules because they know what is and isn’t safe and understand how the world works, but they also have to restrain themselves from being too controlling or infantilizing her/underestimating her abilities. On Rapunzel’s part, she has to figure out how + when to stand up for herself versus when it’s important to listen to their advice, even when she doesn't understand it or may even disagree.
After spending her whole life forced into the submissive role to her mother’s dominant one, I think Rapunzel would have a hard time balancing her newfound independence with the fact that she still has a lot to learn. To me, this might look like vacillating between being reckless--because she’s desperate to prove she can handle things on her own (as expressed in the show)--and then slipping back into a codependent dynamic, only with Eugene or Pascal instead of Gothel because they are the most familiar and “safe” to her. Examples of this could be insisting that Eugene explain everything new to her, or not wanting to go anywhere without Pascal present. It could also mean that she naturally seeks out Pascal or Eugene when she’s frightened, stressed, overwhelmed, or confused. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, and I do believe both would be amazing at comforting her and want to do so, but I think one challenge for her might be learning how to self-soothe when they aren’t there (either because they’re not present, they don’t know what is going on, or they don’t have the emotional energy to comfort someone else). She also might struggle more with learning to trust other people, like her parents, with those feelings instead of always running to Eugene or Pascal.
On the subject of Pascal, having him by her side 24/7 and being the only remnant of her previous life could also create some problems. Pascal will always understand her on a level no one else can because of what they’ve experienced, so finding boundaries and managing a shift in how much time they spend together as both of them form new friendships and hobbies could also be a journey in itself.
Additionally, I believe Rapunzel would have a rougher time figuring out the dynamic between her and Queen Arianna. She’s never had a father figure before, so she has no preconceived notions of what that relationship is supposed to look like. But Arianna is literally replacing the only person she socially interacted with for 18 years straight, so there's bound to be some awkward moments and mistakes there. As I say in my fic, for Arianna the struggle would be to accept the fact that “to Rapunzel, she had the potential to be a lot of things: Mom, Ma, Mama. But Mother would always be someone else. Someone who had gotten to see her first steps, teach her her colors and shapes, spend birthday after birthday with her. Someone who had danced with her, wiped away her tears, given her advice. Someone who had seen her grow up.” Because of how Rapunzel grew up, I think her natural instinct would be to resort to a “fawn response” and walk on eggshells around Arianna, and even blame herself for things feeling awkward because Gothel always made her feel like everything was her fault.
Then we have the ol’ classics: nightmares, saying the wrong thing at the wrong time, pushing herself too hard to learn everything perfectly, not wearing shoes even when it would be appropriate. Not having her magic hair might be a trauma in itself too: not only can she actually get hurt now, which definitely takes some getting used to, she also can’t heal anyone she cares about. That sense of helplessness can be quite terrifying, especially for someone as protective and caring as our girl.
Thanks for the ask! I have a lot of thoughts on Rapunzel and her journey--I would love to expand on it more, so feel free to send more asks if there’s something I didn't touch on!
Request: This was requested a while ago by some friends and I'm finally getting around to it. Actual requests will be finished next :)
A/N: In order to keep this gender neutral, Scrooge refers to the reader as lax. This does not refer to laxatives but it's the best lad/lass gender neutral term I could find. Sorry if it sounds weird! Enjoy!
Rapunzel
Rapunzel finds you sleeping on one of the many benches in the garden, she gently shakes you awake.
"You can't sleep here, come on."
You climb into one of the palace beds and she brings the covers around, covering you up to your chin
She sits on the side of the bed and begins telling you a story, her soft voice lulling you to sleep
She waits until she's sure you're asleep before leaving the room, blowing out the lantern
She stops on the way out, looking back at you and smiling softly
Human! Lightning McQueen
You were travelling with Lightning for one of his races, cross country which meant it was easier to fly
The two of you had mostly done your own things on the flight even though you sat beside each other
He was watching race movies and you were listening to music, looking out the tiny window (since he'd generously offered you the window seat)
Slowly, as you looked out the window, your eyes began to droop and soon you were drifting off into dream land
Lightning took his headphones off to talk to you and realized you were asleep
He pulled the blanket he'd been wearing around you, putting his headphones back on and smiling as he got back into his movie
Kuzco
The emperor had gotten better at dealing with people since his llama incident but he could still be a little dense sometimes
He'd been ranting for like hours about... actually you couldn't even remember at this point
You hadn't got that good of a sleep the night before so you started to drift off
It was only when he saw you leaning against your hand, fast asleep that he noticed
He hesitated not wanting to move you and wake you up, pulling his poncho over his head and draping it over the back of your shoulders like Pacha had done for him
You'd return the poncho when you woke up, until then he had a empire to run
"Enjoy your rest, (Y/n), Emperor's orders!"
Winnie the Pooh
You'd been running around the Hundred Acre Woods all day, Pooh at your side
It was a lot of fun spending time with your friends but also exhausting
As the two of you reached Pooh's home, you yawned loudly
"Oh bother, (Y/n), you need to sleep!"
He dragged you into his home, grabbing a spare blanket and draping it around your shoulders
He pulls you to the bed and you lay down, he lays beside you
"Good night, Pooh."
"Oh, good night, (Y/n)!"
Kristoff
You and Kristoff were bunkering down in a barn to keep warm for the night
Sven was already fast asleep, but you couldn't fall asleep
You laid on a pile of hay staring at the ceiling as Kristoff softly strummed his guitar
"Kristoff-"
"Sorry, am I being too loud? I'll put it away-"
"Can you sing to me? I can't get to sleep.."
You look over at him and he looks back at you, smiling softly
"I've got you, (Y/n)."
He continues strumming, soon adding his soft voice to the mix, lulling you to sleep almost instantly
He continues playing unaware you'd fallen asleep, sitting like that for at least a good hour, before tucking the guitar away
He grabs a cloak and drapes it over you, just so you don't catch a cold
"Sleep well, (Y/n)."
Scrooge McDuck
You spend an awful lot of time at the mansion, mostly because you don't have anywhere else to go
So much so, that you're fairly close with all the Duck family and you even have your own room
Sometimes though, it's tough to fall asleep
You don't know why, it just hits sometimes. Maybe anxieties, an overactive imagination-
"(Y/n), lax, what're ye doin' out here?"
Scrooge McDuck sat beside you on the porch, you'd come out for a bit of fresh air
He must've seen the door ajar and come to investigate
"Just can't sleep, Mr. McDuck."
He sat with you for a bit, until you fell asleep on the porch against him. Lifting you up, he carried you to bed, tucking you in and kissing your forehead.
"G'night, dear."
Beast
Living in the castle with the Beast sucked sometimes, but for the most part you were content for now
After all, all of your needs were basically taken care of
The only thing you couldn't seem to do was sleep
You wandered the corridors of the castle at night, tired but not able to fall asleep once your head hit the pillow
"Who goes there?" The gruff voice asked as you stepped into the room he was sitting in by the fire, sat at the piano
"I- It's just me, I'm sorry to bother you. I was just having trouble sleeping-"
He gestured for you to come sit by him and you did, sitting in one of the big backed chairs you usually used for reading and listening to his fingers dance across the keys
It was peaceful
You felt yourself slowly slipping and falling asleep
When he glanced over and realized you were asleep, he stood, throwing a random blanket over your form before sweeping out of the room
Goofy
There was silence in the Goof household, which was a relief
You were over having a sleepover with Max and the two of you had finally crashed
Goofy came out to assess the damage and found the two of you fast asleep on the couch, draped in awkward positions
He quickly went about shifting you both into more comfortable positions and finding a blanket to drape over the two of you
"Gawrsh, you two are growing up fast, this blanket used to be so big," he mumbled seeing it barely fit the two of you now
He found another one and tucked you both in
"G'night, kids."
Aladdin
There wasn't a lot of rest for the weary on the streets of Agrabah but sometimes there was a rare moment where you just couldn't push on any further and you'd fall asleep
Usually, during these times, Aladdin would pull you to his makeshift home
Tucking you into one of his makeshift blankets, he'd stand 'guard' while you slept soundly for however long you needed
Sometimes he would leave for a bit and leave you with food when you woke up
Most of the time he stayed though, pretending like you weren't sleeping in a bundle on his floor
Donald Duck
Donald and you had been close for a while now, you slept a lot and loved your sleep
He would often find you draped around his houseboat out of the blue
Every time he would find a blanket and drape it over your sleeping form
If you stirred, he'd smile and lift his hat and you'd smile
If you didn't, he'd walk off and you'd awaken with the blanket on you
You usually appreciated the gesture though, you couldn't help that you needed so much sleep but you appreciated that Donald was there to support you when you needed it
First of all I think we all know that being an equal opportunity lover was a big help in convincing the locals to help him evade law enforcement during his Flynn Rider days
None of the thugs use slurs that are offensive to the LGBTQ community because Eugene may be a loser, but he’s still their FRIEND
The one time an out-of-town thug did use one, there was an all out brawl (Varian started it and Maximus finished it)
Many of his nights as a thief were spent hanging out in LGBTQ-friendly bars with Lance and waking up in the morning hungover, shirtless, and covered in glitter
All three of Rapunzel’s books from the tower were extremely heteronormative, so in addition to helping her unlearn the “men are scary with pointy teeth” lie Gothel told her, he also teaches her about all the other identities that exist
At first Eugene is very scared to come out to Rapunzel because although she has been extremely receptive to all this new information, dealing with biphobia in the past (at the orphanage, from Stalyan and the Baron, from bullies at Vardaros) has made him concerned about what she might think. Of course when she does find out Rapunzel thinks it’s super awesome and sews him a little bi flag to put on his satchel and all his worries were for naught
Rapunzel plans a massive Pride Parade in Corona every year and he gets to ride on a float! What more could a man ask for?
He’s the first one to notice that Cass is definitely not straight and when she does come out, he brings her to the aforementioned LGTBQ bars, appoints himself her wingman, attempts to teach her the smolder, and basically ushers her into the local LGBTQ community. Cass grumbles and acts like she hates it but deep down she’s relieved she’s not the only queer person in the group
