hi rowan! i’m the anon who asked about the ending for a world apart c: thank you for answering, you just made my day 🥺 as i’ve said, i really love your writing and you’re one of my favorite writers ever <3 this time i’m gonna ask you about ‘rascal’ if you don’t mind 😅 i loved rascal so much it was so cute endearing! i wanted to ask how you came up with the plot for that? :D
oh you’re so sweet T-T thank you so much you’ve made me smile today hhhh i simply Do Not Deserve—
and i don’t mind at all! i really do love rambling about this sort of stuff and questions like these let me indulge myself adjsjs
believe it or not, but initially rascal was kind of difficult for me to plot! i didn’t know what direction i wanted to take it in for a very long time, even though i knew i loved the concept of pirate!bokuto. i didn’t know if i wanted the reader to also be a pirate (and if they were, whether or not they’d be friend or foe), whether the world would be fantastical or closer to historical fact (and how much research would be required for both), etc.
i went with the bartender plot because it would require the least amount of legwork in terms of plot and worldbuilding. not that i was trying to be lazy! it was more that if i was going to build the world i felt was necessary for a fic where the reader was also a pirate, it would have to be for more than just a one-shot (and at that period in my life i simply didn’t have the time to sink into worldbuilding and planning for a series).
from there, i thought it would be cute to play the angle of “bokuto trying — and continually failing — to impress his crush.” it was easier from there-on out to come up with little scenarios to string together, and once i had enough ideas from brainstorming i picked out the most effective ones. i also just played on my favourite tropes from the genre — swords, outfits, shenanigans. i tend to find bokuto fairly easy to brainstorm plots for because i just draw on his natural capacity for chaos.
i feel like i didn’t say anything of substance but i hope you enjoy reading my ramble as much as I did writing it ahskskskdjsk
