“You’re tense,” he says.
“Too much work lately,” Sam replies, already feeling the soreness leaving his body.
Bucky kisses the back of his neck softly. “Don’t worry about that now,” he whispers into Sam’s ear, “I’m here. I’ve got you.”
“You’ve got me,” Sam murmurs, sinking deeper in the water. God, it feels good. Bucky’s reassurance settles him, relaxes him until he’s little more than a puddle against Bucky’s chest, soaking in the warmth from both his skin and the bathwater. Slowly, Bucky cleans Sam’s chest and arms, anything he can reach without changing their positions. The slow circles of his hands soothe aches Sam didn’t even know he had, loosening his muscles until he’s afraid that he’ll be unable to stand when it’s over.

His insides do a nervous little swoop, even though this is just Bucky, just them--or maybe because it is. Shit, freefall is easier. “Or we play along.”
Helping out the Guardians on an undercover mission, Sam and Bucky end up in a situation they didn't plan for.

Bucky slides his hand up Sam’s arm, reaches his shoulder, squeezes it, takes a step closer to him, says, “Sam, whatever it is, it’s just me.”
Sam sighs, then nods, asks, “Would it be okay if we stayed together tonight?”
“Of course.” Bucky’s not sure why Sam has been so cagey about asking for that. They’ve spent many a night together, sleepless on the couch because Bucky’s insomnia is bad or because one of them has had a nightmare. “You wanna watch something?” Bucky asks, because sometimes Sam likes the TV on, something to focus on, though that hasn’t seemed to be working for him this evening, and sometimes he wants to sit with his thoughts, quiet but not alone, and occasionally he needs to share them.
“No,” he says. “I’m tired. I want to go to bed. I just…”
And Bucky gets it, what Sam wants, why he didn’t want to ask. Because this is a little different than their usual. Though really not all that dissimilar to the times they’ve eventually fallen asleep together on the couch. “You don’t want to be alone?” After a mission, Sam is acting odd. Bucky doesn't know what's wrong but he wants Sam to be alright.
