Bhakta Salabega
Do you know every year during Rath Yatra Lord Jagannath's chariot (Nandi gosh) pauses for some time near the samadhi of a devotee who was Muslim by birth.
Bhakta Salabega (c. 17th century) was a legendary Odia poet and one of the most celebrated devotees of Lord Jagannath, famous for composing soulful bhajans that are still sung throughout Odisha.
Despite being born to a Muslim father and a Hindu mother, he became one of the most revered Vaishnava saints in Jagannath tradition.
Early life and path to devotion:
His father, was a powerful Mughal commander. While his mother was a Hindu Brahmin widow captured during a Mughal campaign. Salabega was born to them and raised in a military camp culture, away from traditional temple or religious life.
Salabega was once severely wounded in battle. His mother advised him to chant the name of Lord Vishnu/Jagannath. Miraculously healing, he devoted himself entirely to Jagannath. This marked the beginning of his spiritual and devotional journey.
Salabega the Poet:
He is known for writing deeply emotional devotional songs—bhajans—to Lord Jagannath and Krishna.
Some famous themes in his poetry:
Longing for divine love
Surrender and helplessness
Devotion despite distance
Pleading for Darshan of Jagannath
His famous compositions include:
Ahe Nila Saila (invocation to the Blue Mountain, Jagannath Puri)
Kene Gheni Jauchha Jagannatha ku
Bajuchi Mohana Banshi
The Ratha Yatra miracle:
On one occasion, due to his Muslim identity, he was not allowed inside Jagannath Temple.
He awaited Darshan during Rath Yatra, but was delayed due to illness.
According to legend, Lord Jagannath’s chariot stopped near his living place on the Grand Road and would not move until Salabega arrived and had Darshan.
Because of this, even today his samadhi (tomb) stands on the Grand Road of Puri, right along the chariot path—an honor given to almost no one. And every year the Lord's chariot stops for some time for his devotee.
His bhajans are considered some of the purest expressions of bhakti in Odisha.
