I love, like, threads of influence in pop culture? Like the Beach Boys made their 1965 hit “California Girls” and that influenced the name of Katy Perry’s 2010 hit “California Gurls”, and then children’s television network The Hub (2010-2014) made a parody version of the Katy Perry song featuring their most popular show, My Little Pony, and called it “Equestria Girls”. Then when they decided to make a My Little Pony spinoff where the ponies where humans (to compeat with Monster High), they named it Equestria Girls as a call back to the song parody. So, the Beach Boys indirectly named a children’s toy and I think that’s beautiful.

Anyways, my thoughts on the Words of Love Discourse: The Beatles version does have a brighter, more peppy guitar riff than the original, thought both sound pretty great. I think the Beatles riff is a tad bit catcher, aided by a new clapping beat that makes the song feel faster overall. But as for the vocals…just compare how Buddy Holly softly sings “Darling I love you” versus how the Beatles drone through that same line like they’re bored with the song already. Buddy’s harmoy line is softer and higher than the main vocal line, while Paul? and John’s harmonies kinda blend into a raspy low drone. For me, the original version of the song is the best. But I do like how the Beatles changed the line “the words I want to hear” into “the words I long to hear”. That sounds so much more romantic to me, even though the meaning is the same. I kinda wish someone would combine the two versions into one, with the Beatles instrumentation but Buddy’s singing? Maybe keep the Beatles on the Mmm parts??

Anyways last year I was obsessed with the more Doo Wop side of 50s music (because of Grease and my grandparents) and so I made a playlist based on the TvTropes page “50s Progression” so I could listen to music from lots of different time periods that still sounded “50s”. “Everyday” was on that playlist and to be honest I thought it was a modern song at first, like something made in the 2000s. I really liked it, though the “ahey ahey hey” part sort of weirded me out back then. I also liked the look of the thumbnail picture of a guy wearing big glasses. I decided to check the artist profile out and was surprised to learn he was from the 50s. Later I was listening to Beatles for Sale and I really liked “Words of Love”. I thought it was the best song on the album and an early indicator of how much better they were going to become. Then I found out who wrote it. At that point I descended into Buddy Holly Hell™ and made the horrible discoveries was that he was from Texas (as a Californian I had a ingrained distrust of texas) and also he was one of the guys on that one plane crash. And this whole year I’ve been obsessed and wound up learning about a lot of other amazing Rock n’ Roll musicians as well like Chuck Berry and Ritchie Valens and Carl Perkins and Little Richard and Roy Orbison, and made a Rock n’ Roll sideblog and spent a lot of time practicing guitar.

There are 3 types of Beatles fans on Tumblr

1. Teens who are the usual cute fangirl/boy types and ship McLennon 2. Actual older adults who grew up with the Beatles and see them as real people and quote the lyrics to Imagine unironically 3. Shitposters who watch the Beatles cartoon so much they call the Beatles fictional characters and make vampire furry AUs for the irony

Ok, so what we got here is the album cover of the soundtrack to a video game based on a sports star that’s a parody of the cover of “London Calling” by the Clash, which was itself a homage to the cover of Elvis Presley’s first album.

Ok, you know how “Too Dumb to Die” by Green Day starts with Billie Joe singing “Oh, oh I love you, Oh, oh I do” in a soft voice? For the longest time that confused me so much because it’s almost taken verbatim from the 60s song “Angel Baby”. I kept wondering why Green Day would reference this obscure old pop song. But then I remembered. John Lennon did a cover of “Angel Baby”. Billie Joe Armstrong considers John Lennon a musical influence, and even did a cover of one of his songs for a tribute album. It’s all connected.
