on the selfishness of the astreans;
✧˖°. the heavens secret universe angels are selfish. emotionless. have an insane superiority complex (think of the council and how they look down on hell, even though hell is vital to maintaining the balance—think of eragon, rebecca, torrendo).
the astreans always took care of audrey and gave up/were willing to give up a lot for her:
mikael: he was certain they'd leave the battle unscathed—they were talking about marriage and kids. he healed her after she was poisoned in silentgrove, he healed her after s1 finale, he opposed the superiors when they wanted to take her away
david: wanted to stay on earth with her and give up his immortality. david was ready to lose everything by standing up to somnus and furius just to fight for what he and audrey had. his bravado aside, he wanted a calm, simple life and, most of all, not to become like his father, despite all the complicated feelings he harboured towards him.
raphael: because of their feelings, he started doubting his purpose and eventually joined the 'bad guy's' side just to save audrey--the one created for one purpose rebelled because a simple mortal woman showed him how wonderful life can be when you let yourself love
cassiel: *clown mode on* HE STOPPED BEING A GRUMP. seriously though, iirc, he said that he started believing in love again (or something along those lines) and, like the rest of them, was making plans with audrey to move away and start a life together, even in hell—he promises to help audrey become an unclaimed and grow accustomed to hell to which audrey responds that she trusts him with her life and will follow him anywhere.
yes, the astreans acted very selfishly by bringing audrey back while knowing how much she'd suffered on earth. but they did it out of love, love that those immortal beings couldn't live without, love that she brought into their lives with her appearance. HOWEVER, audrey suffered as a child. the beast stuff aside, id argue she actually liked her life, she was always kind, playful, and a bit desperate for love (look at the first eps of s1...).
the astreans loved her so much that they decided to lay to rest next to her coffin. they were heartbroken, which malek used to get what he wanted.
malek approached the astreans when they were extremely vulnerable —each of them was betrayed by heaven—betrayed, abandoned, and robbed.
• mikael was being lied to for centuries just so heaven had leverage over him in case he ever rebelled, and his brother is being eaten alive by mice as he waits in a cold cell, hallucinating.
• cassiel and his sister were sent to death just so heaven could learn what their new poison would do to immortals, and then they let him drown in guilt and self flagellate for (i assume) centuries as they lied about their involvement.
• felonia, my poor baby. she was being mistreated, belittled, and tortured for so long. in this case, heaven lied, shocking!, promising that there was a sliver of chance she'd get to see her family again if she behaved, only to learn that almost all of them were dead and everyone knew about it.
• raphael... created for the sole purpose of dying in agony, assembled and reassembled until father was content with his little creation. the most gentle soul, robbed of experiencing the simplest joys and emotions, so as not to grow attached to anything. abandoned by his creator, yet never doubting, never losing faith, only to be blinded by the sheer power of the destructive force inside him.
• and at long last, david. david who tried to run away from anything connected to his family, his curse, who wanted to lead a simple life on earth and grow old with his beloved. david who made a deal with a demon to save his friends and beloved, david held on a short leash by the superiors for god knows how long.
so imagine this—youre grieving the loss of the person who's brought so much life and light into your life in such a short amount of time, you lose your home, you get betrayed by your kind, and suddenly, someone appears and promises to resurrect that person and help you take revenge on those who had lied to you for centuries and betrayed you in the most vital moment, leaving you to die like you're nothing.
it's a deal almost anyone would take. and it's a deal they take because of the humanity that audrey taught them.
and they know what they've done to her. look:
and now look at audreys reaction:
yes, they acted selfishly, BUT it was out of pure love for her. BUT it doesn't change the fact that they sentenced her to immense suffering, knowingly or not (id argue that they didn't know just how cruel shephamalum would be but lets talk about it another time). but you should keep it all in mind before spewing pure hate toward the astreans.
now onto theorising—i can't prove it but my money's on the fact that malek lied to astreans, purposefully or not. all he told them was "audrey will rise," they promised to serve shephamalum themselves, not for audrey to go through hell again. again, given that malek is a love interest, im placing my money on him actually not knowing the extent of the suffering because he wouldnt gone through with it if he did.
