He should have known from the way his shoulder had seared from the first time the older man had grabbed him. But so much had happened that day he didn't even think about it until he was getting settled at the apartment Santos had offered and he'd caught a glance at it. He'd dragged his feet about bringing it up for a few days until he couldn't ignore it anymore.

He shouldn't have expected Robby to be angry about it though, it's not like it was something that he could control but he'd heard stories of soulmates being rejected. "Honestly? Scared?" Even with Robby reacting well there was also how much it complicated this rotation. "I don't know how this is supposed to work."

the soft touch makes her wince, if only because it feels like he's a thousand degrees hotter than she is. lips press together to form a thin line and her brows furrow firmly, a soft huff escaping. "alright. but i promise you, i'm fine. i'll go see the nurse and she'll kick me out in a heartbeat."

that she winced at his touch didn't exactly reassure him that she was alright. he nodded and offered a little smile, trying to seem unconcerned but he knew it probably didn't come across. "better safe than sorry, especially here. i'd rather be a little short staffed than risk you getting worse or the patients getting sick from you, okay?"

"yeah, yeah. i know." ellie huffs, resistant but compliant at the same time. she doesn't want to get sick and maybe if she were strong enough, she could push through it but robby makes a fair point. she doesn't want to get the patients sick. they're already going through the worst day of their life. she can't make it worse. "will you walk with me?"

"just that time of year. they'll probably have cleaners out soon." because the board could always find the money to worry about the outward appearance but never to appropriately staff the hospital. he sighed quickly as he tried to subtly stretch his back. "i'm happy to tell gloria that someone was complaining about it, though."

"by all means. looks like a shit heap. s'a wonder you get anyone comin' in at all." lips press together and he winces. "sorry, s'not a dig on you, not at all. you guys are doin' fuckin' amazin' all things considered. more of a dig on the upper head honchos who don't wanna do shit about how it looks on the outside." nice save. "you doin' alright?"

"Oh please. If they needed us, they'd definitely find a way. Call up the hotel or something." She knew what her team was like, they would certainly find a way to contact her if they absolutely needed her. She really hoped that she might get away with having at least a few days without being needed. She knew she was integral to the team but surely they could manage without her for a short while. "A relaxing one. Where would you pick?"

"I think Dana would kill them if she found out someone hunted me down while I was on vacation but I can see admin trying it." And if not her then Jack would definitely chew some people out over it, something he was extremely grateful for. "If your passport is up to date, we could get out of the country for a bit." Even a short trip away would do them well, give them a nice break even if things would still be crazy when they got back.

"We could." She'd have to clear it with the head honcho but she had a feeling she'd be granted leave, with how hard she worked and how much shit they constantly went through. They all needed a break so hopefully if she takes a break, the rest of the team will follow. "Where were you thinking? Somewhere tropical or somewhere cold?"
