you know, I was thinking today about all the English teachers I know, and I’ve come to the conclusion that they may be the hardest working teachers. They are the ones who always seem the most tired. They do so much prep behind the scenes that may just end up getting changed at the last minute cause the lesson isn’t going as well as they had planned. They have to constantly deal with all the standardized testing bullshit because reading comprehension is such a heavily tested skill. Some of the teachers I work with have small babies at home and you can sometimes hear the baby crying in the background or in a cot near them. One told me she’s lucky when she gets 2-3 straight hours of sleep. So many of the English/reading teachers I know are losing it this year over the poor engagement of kids over zoom/google meet, just getting them to turn in the most basic/easy assignment is like pulling teeth.
“You’d think I asked them to write a 10-page paper! I only asked for a paragraph with evidence from the text!”
All this to say: be kind to your teachers, specifically your English teachers, most of them are they are doing the best they can and they are bone tired.
