We’re starting our Reading Without Walls challenge at Merrillville branch today! Kids who take the challenge will earn a certificate. Adults are also welcome to join in for the simple reward of having read something different :)

You can choose a book that meets any of the following criteria for this challenge:

A book about a character who doesn’t look like you

A book about a character who doesn’t live like you

A book about a topic you don’t know much about

A book in a format you don’t usually read

Once you’ve read the book, come tell us about it. If you’re 18 or younger, we’ll give you a Reading Without Walls certificate. And all ages are welcome to post a picture of you and your book using #ReadingWithoutWalls (even if you’re not local!) Don’t forget to tag us!

#readingwithoutwalls Right now I’m reading American Street by Ibi Zoboi. This fantastic book tells the story of Fabiola, a teenager who immigrates from Haiti to Detroit. On their journey to the U.S., Fabiola’s mother is detained in customs, so Fabiola must navigate her new American life without her. Fabiola and I are very different, both in identity and in circumstance: she is black, an immigrant, speaks English as a second language, and she’s younger than I am. Reading about her experience has been emotional and eye-opening--everything I love in a good read.

#readingwithoutwalls  Women Race and Class by Angela Davis

Learning a lot about both the history of Black Liberation and Women's Suffrage as well as the cruel rifts that have existed between the two.  Its remarkable how often the politics of 100 years ago are echoed today.  Hopefully greater unity can be achieved in part by reading this book and others like it.
