              ❛   I brought an extra pair just in case !   ❜   RUBY   all but coos, her own skates dangling by their laces between two gloved fingers. The Boardwalk --- and the frozen ocean beside it --- was already lively with the delighted screaming and laughter of fellow citizens, and the lights looked downright brilliant reflecting off the thick sheets of ice !  She idly wonders if this kind of thing would make Neptune more or less nervous about the ocean view... But that’s not important right now !  

         What is important is that she and Penny are finally on the same page, letting her push some of those more troubling thoughts aside for a while... And more than that, this is definitely one of the activities she’d always mulled over doing with her !  Granted, she knew even then that it had been a pipe dream --- and nothing in Patch was as extreme as this makeshift skating rink... 

              ❛   How good are you on ice, anyway ?  I always wondered if you had some kinda advantage or not...   ❜

          SHE’S   just... Standing there. She’s just walking there, smiling there, she’s just standing there --- Penny Polendina may look different, but everything about her is unmistakably... Penny. It should be something Ruby’s used to by now; she’s come face-to-face with Pyrrha, with her mother of all people... But she still finds herself frozen in shock once again. She can practically feel her pupils dilating --- and she knows for a fact that the noises leaving her mouth weren’t anything coherent. 

          When she finally speaks, her voice is heartbreakingly gentle; a question more than a statement, spoken as if gently rousing a dear friend from sleep. Two syllables have never wavered so much on someone’s tongue... But it’s a name she’s hesitated to ever fully speak for years.

             ❛   Heh... well, if you can’t sleep, who’s gonna be the chipper wake-up call in the morning ?   ❜   EVERY   fiber of her being softens, her expression most of all; it’s a concentrated effort to smooth out the creases between her brows. It’s not like she’s surprised... Have any of them really slept since Atlas ?  Still, she didn’t expect to find Penny out and about like this, not at so late an hour --- hence the sheer terror for those brief five seconds it took to recognize her. How did it even take so long to register that hair... ?

        She plops unceremoniously on the ground beside her, arms splayed behind her to support her weight --- one poised just beyond the small of Penny’s back as she scooted in closer.   ❛   That’s okay,   ❜   Ruby adds after a small pause, in case her sarcasm wasn’t readily apparent. Her head rests easily on her friend’s shoulder, just like before... It was small, but it was all she could offer. Well --- that, and some company.   ❛   We’ll just not-sleep together for a while. And when it gets too cold, we can not-sleep inside. Okay... ?   ❜

“Salutations, Ms. Polendina.” Had she the opportunity, she might have liked to have a longer discussion with this one. They were fundamentally similar after all. “I present you this data disc, which contains your fondest memories of your friends. That way, regardless of what happens, you will never forget.” It was a fear she had about her own memory. Forgetting would be... painful.

When Red had first seen the white of winter take over Spirale, her first reaction was excitement. It wasn’t often that Cloudbank was gifted with real snow, since most people voted against having it, but she was more than happy to be experience it once the storm had stopped. Though as the woman and her sentient weapon made their way through town, admiring each display that had been set up around quite a popular shopping center, they noticed that something didn’t seem quite.. right.

Amongst the twinkling lights and tiny winter decorations, parts of the displays suddenly came alive! But only the snowflakes began to move, dancing their way through crowds of people and avoiding contact with anyone who tried to reach out and grab them. They almost looked like they were intentionally causing trouble; knocking other displays over, causing the employees to attempt to catch them-- but to no avail.

Red began to follow a particular one, her blue eyes focused on it until she noticed it nearing a young girl. Though she couldn’t call out to her, the Transistor already knew what to do; attempting to get her attention as Red’s heels hurriedly clicked after the fake piece of snow.
