Teaching my dog to drop items on command was trickier than I expected at first, but once I found the right approach, it became much smoother. I quickly realized that patience and consistency were key. Instead of scolding him when he refused, I focused on making the process positive and rewarding. Using treats and praise worked wonders, turning the “drop it” command into something he actually wanted to do.

You often see video clips of animals after recall has been trained, but how do you get started? We need to pair the signal with the action (aka coming to us) followed by that action getting reinforced. This is what gives your signal/cue significance. That is what is happening here. We are just creating reps of this. These baby flamingos are probably cueing off of seeing the bowl, their favorite keepers and/or seeing other birds eating for now. But as we build up reinforcement history with the signal (click), we can test their attention to the audio cue by fading out the other signals. You will also notice the click sound is intended to be a cue to walk to the bowl as opposed to the typical “you did a behavior correctly” bridging stimulus. Eventually the goal is that the flock of the hand raised flamingos will recall out of the main group when they hear the clicker. They are off to a good start!
