Earth and clover

We lie rooted in the deep green grass surrounded by blades and burdock and the scent of damp earth and clover,

medicine for our city sickness. The cloud quilt over our heads carries no threat, though it is chased by petrichor and its conversation with the rumbling traffic. We each hold a hand —

having poured out our laughter, into the air — our others rest on the spiriting promise of our bellies, now which are empty. But we a not hungry:

not for the lip sweet kiss of goodbye, not for the dew drenched touch of hello not for the flesh, not for the fever, not for anything below

our hearts; only for time. Time, we devour. Time, we swallow like the butterfly net swallows the memories of the meadow. Time, that we drink as it comes and then goes like a late summer shower.

It is starting to rain

A Prisoner & a prostitute

who we are.

Thief.

Liar.

Punk.

Loner.

Boyfriend.

but people change

and with them

their labels.

but certain phases

aren’t phases

and cause enough

of a psychic shift

that they

stick

no matter

how hard

you scrub

your mind.

you can only press a pencil

so deep into the paper

before even the best of erasers

can’t fully erase the evidence

of what word

you chose.

How Infatuation Feels.

I am an expert at breaking my own heart. My fingers are permanently plastered in prit stick glue. I spend my nights gluing the pieces back together. My weakness is not kryptonite, silver, or a spider bite. My weakness is infatuation. And this is what it feels like:

Like childhood legends were true. You spiked my drink with apple seeds and apple trees grew in my stomach. You planted the tree, now when you look at me, each apple falls like ping pong balls and my stomach swish swashes like the sea.

Like if our fingertips touched; the world would implode. Like the world would crack, whisk, cook and make pancakes for two. They would ooze with syrup as sweet as your spit.

Like dog-earing your body as if it’s my favourite page in my favourite book. Like your voice is a melody and your melody is easier to digest than medicine. Like every love poem I’ve ever written is actually a person and that person is you. Like infatuation is love but a love untrue.

Infatuation feels like possession and makes God consider sin. If love is worse than this, hand me my glue hand me my heart and let the gluing begin.

My life lit up like a phoenix from the flames,

The universe is in our favour,

Like God created our souls on the same string stronger than ever,

Forever together,

Limitless love I feel for you,

I’d live a thousand lifetimes over and over again until I meet you,

I was lost in the dark blinded my misguidedness,

You are the light at the end that revealed to me,

A love so pure and so deep I can believe it’s real,

I can’t control the electricity when I’m with you,

You make my fantasies a reality,

Pinch me I must be dreaming in all sincerity,

I can’t get enough,

You’re the air that I breathe,

And oh how sweet it is when you’re with me,

We’re forever stuck in synchronicity,

Like two souls leading the waves of love around the universe,

Our hands touch and the sensation overwhelms me,

Warming you up was meant to be,

My insides are filled with an immersive flame of love,

A love that I’m so glad I was able to share with you,

You are the magic to my dreams,

The magic that makes me feel weightless,

A kiss so ecstatic and passionate,

A sweet nectar of your lips I’m hooked instantly,

My heavenly ice cream a craving no other can satisfy.

Wild horses

The horse, eyes bright

moves closer, my father,

how big he seemed then, his body

leant against the car door, his arm

stretched out to the horse. Stay back

my mother warns, stay back. The horse,

body black and gleaming, comes closer still

to the car, to my father. The sun

low down on the horizon. The past,

the present, shadows touching.
