The Undoing
The Undoing [trailer]
Grace and Jonathan Fraser are living the only lives they ever wanted for themselves. Overnight a chasm opens in their lives: a violent death and a chain of terrible revelations.
For about four episodes it keeps up the mystery, tension and ambiguity about what has happened very well. Even then it was often at risk of becoming a soap opera melodrama but the very talented cast prevented it. Some of the courtroom scenes were good too, but the ending was just too much.
I'm very happy that Hugh Grant continues to find roles after he "threatened" to quit acting. He's also considerably broadened his range. His ability to switch from charming to menacing is fun to watch.
I know there probably wouldn't be a miniseries if she does, but I started shouting at Grace early on that she needs to take a lawyer. Someone with her wealthy background would surely know, and doubly so because of the irritating behaviour of the two detectives. I constantly wanted to see their IDs to make sure they are real officers.
Noma Dumezweni's laywer bluntness was refreshing. I wonder how often defense lawyers go that far in reality in terms of profiling jurors and such.
Sutherland giving a short Liam Neeson Taken speech (TM) was amusing. And frightening.
I frequently wondered if Kidman's hair got paid extra.
