I’ll be doing this for Burn the Bone since I need some more beta readers!
“Impressive show Reddina. Your clan will be lucky if that fire only destroys a few buildings.”
“Who are you? How do you know my name?” She had to shout over the roaring wind.
“I am an investor, and I know your name because I have been tracking your talents. You are the strongest of your clan,” he paused while he stepped to the side of the door, “Now, I do hate to be terse but desperate times and all.”
The man gestured to the car, urging her inside. Red didn’t move.
“Get in the car Reddina. I will use force if I must.”
From the other direction, one of the survivors from a previous attack popped out from behind a corner like a fucking jack-in-the-box. Dimitri knew his face, and apparently the asshole recognized the light show. Oh, fucking hell.
Dimitri took a deep breath and lowered his eyes to the floor. If it weren’t for the smell of char lingering in the air the guy might have stood a chance. Maybe. Dimitri sucked it in, sucked in the stench of death, and the Drugha blood coursed through him with a power he’d never felt. His palms lit up so bright, the demon reeled back, and Dimitri watched as the black haze covered his vision.
The guy pulled out a walkie, “Intruder! South corridor 97! Get your asses here now!”
The change in his vision was so stark, so opaque, Dimitri almost hesitated. Almost. Everything was a tinge of black edged in cobalt the same color as his gift. Out of the corner of his eye, he could make out the shape of his target, of the noisy thing that yelled into a box. Dimitri swiveled his head toward it, his body slowly, purposely following it. He sunk into his shoulders, his fingers cranked into luminescent claws. Dimitri stared at the mass from under his brows.
He growled, low, so very low.
Dimitri was at it in the time it took to lick his lips, and it froze. It trembled. It wept. He took in a sweet breath of the creatures fear and grinned. Dimitri lifted his hands to either side of its face, hovering them just inches from its skin. The blue glow shone on it, and even through his darkened vision, Dimitri could see the light bounce off the dribbling wetness leaking from it.
His palms found its face. Black chunks of glassy carbon crumbled between his fingers. And more shapes were coming. Many more. They ran at him from hallways all around him and practically threw themselves to his feet. In the black of the hall, lines of blue in the vague shapes of people appeared and disappeared just as quick as they met Dimitri’s palms. The spaced echoed with the noise of crunching beneath his boots, and the smell of carbon and burnt meat seeped into his clothes.
It was deafening. The sound of blood in his ears, the screeches, and yelps bouncing off the concrete, the fwhoop it made each time the squiggly lines flashed into nothing. It was deafening, but it was also silent. Joined together with the blackened vision was muffled, muted sounds that barely registered. They were coming from too far away, or he was too far away.
But something was sounding at the edge of his hearing.
Dimitri circled trying to find the irritating buzz. There were just lines, blues lines in the pitch around him. The swarmed like annoying insects flitting through the air, nipping at him. A blur of sapphire specks rushed toward him. Dimitri swatted at them, and the scream that broke out ripped into his ears.
“Ahh! Dimitri! Snap out of it!”
“Well, next time I’ll wake you up when you’re holding your young, that way you’ll drop her, and Hope will kill you before I have to listen to this speech.”
