Never Love an Anchor but it’s Reen from Mistborn

On some level I think I always understood

That a ship could never really love an anchor

So I did the only thing that I could

And severed the rope to set you sailing from my harbor

Reen did his best to keep Vin away from the Ministry in every way possible. He probably knew she was an Allomancer, how could he not, and so hurt her mentally and physically to make sure that she never trusted anyone with her secret. In turn he lost her.

There are times where I still wonder about you

You are someone I have loved but never known

And you'll never see the reasons I had

For keeping my claws away when they were close enough to hurt you

Reen never gave her up on the streets when it would have been easy to just get rid of her and keep his life much more safe and simple. He died before he gave the Inquisitors information on Vin and never in his right mind gave them information about her.

I am selfish, I am broken, I am cruel

I am all the things they might have said to you

Do you ever think of me and my two hands

And wondered why they never soothed your fevers

And wondered why they never tied your shoes

And wondered why they never held you gently

And wondered why they never had the chance to lose you?

He was never the brother that Vin wanted or needed and it was for a purpose. He saw his little sister and mother die or be driven insane by the hands of the Ministry. He would do anything to keep her alive.

Basically,

Reen was by no means a good brother or person, without Kelsier, Vin would probably be dead or stayed forever as a fearful skaa girl with ‘luck.’ Yet without Reen, Vin would have died early on and not learned the skills she needed to survive the underworld and live unobtrusively as a Mistborn. He loved her more than his own life but was never able to show it in the ways a brother should.
