NYM - Merchant Republic of Thalon

The Thalon Republic is a major nation based in what could be considered the heart of the Avanor continent, which has been made powerful thanks to its focus on clever investments and heavy mercantilism. It is ruled by various Trade Princes, law-making Ealdormen of the Green Council, and internationally mighty organizations like the Balfon Bank and the League of Coins. The Thalon Republic is a key member of the Thalian Alliance, of which the other major member is the United Thivian City-States. Between them they possess several lesser nations and city-states throughout the Thalia region. Thalon is perhaps the most influential and wealthiest nation in not only the Twin-Continents, but the entire known world as a whole. As a nation founded primarily on managing and conducting trade, Thalon has established several trade posts, headquarters, and merchant organizations throughout both other nations and on distant colonial frontiers. The nation is capable of protecting its faraway investments through its strong Merchant Fleets, which are part of the most advanced navy in the world. In addition, whenever any ventures the nation's Princes invest in are ready to be reaped, they send their highly trained agents and debt-collectors, known simply as the "Hoodmen", to stake their rightful claims; be it through coin, threats, or blood. As the home of the League of Coins, which is the leading supervisor in matters of trade, value of goods, merchant laws, and general currency, Thalon enjoys a great deal of decisive will in foreign nations as well. The Republic is said to be run on an obsession for bureaucratic process, contracts, and absolute obedience to even the smallest laws, though those clever or ambitious enough will know where to find loopholes. Thalon is equally a place where criminals and corruption thrives, as the greedy lure of coin attracts all who seek it; from the ambitious backstabbing Princes of intrigue above, to the lowly rats scurrying sneakily in the shadows below.
