To get ahead of the 7.45 criterion dungeon and the inevitable wave of racist nonsense it will bring onto my dash, I'd like to pointedly remind the community that these "reward" outfits are extremely racist and Orientalist. If I see characters dressed in these, I will block.
People dressing their characters in these is not okay. No, not even as satire. Cut it out.
Making anything similarly "inspired" without any cultural research or sensitivity is not okay.
SE's choice to make their racism canon (yet again) through the cop-out of "it's a storybook" does not make it okay.
There are numerous sources on Orientalism in multiple forms and fandoms, with topics including but not limited to this "belly dancer" aesthetic. Please do some research and educate yourself, and listen to those of us who exist in fan spaces with this specific arm of racism constantly shoved into our faces. Being BIPOC does not exclude you from doing this work either.
An entire people's culture is not an aesthetic. I'm tired of seeing racist "Arabian Nights" fantasies in 2026, in spaces where I'm there to have fun and play like everyone else. A community becomes safer for marginalized people with intention, care, and knowledge. So please do your best going forward.
