Renora Week Day 7: Life or Death
hah you thought this was going to be angst? hell naw get ready for some slightly overdramatic, pregnant!Nora fluff
“Ren Ren Ren Ren Ren!”
Ren jolted awake to Nora’s desperate yells, throwing the blankets off of them both and grabbing for his weapon on the nightstand. “What’s wrong?”
Nora took a deep breath, one hand on her swollen stomach. Her distressed face was lit by the moonlight streaming in through their window. “I need one of your green smoothies. Right now.”
Ren fell back against the pillow, calming his pounding heart. “You don’t even like them.”
“No, they’re disgusting. But the babies need them. Right now.”
“It’s 2:37 AM, Nora.”
“Which is now smoothie time.” She stuck out her bottom lip and rubbed both hands over her belly. “Pleaaase?”
“Mkay, c’mon,” he mumbled, swinging his feet out of bed and rubbing his eyes. “I don’t even know if we have the stuff for it, though.”
She lurched out of bed, taking a moment to balance her very pregnant stomach. “If we don’t, will you pleaaaaase go get it? I swear I feel like I’m gonna die if I don’t drink it soon. Please.”
“‘Course, lightning bug.”
“Yay!” She grabbed his hand and led her half-asleep hubby to the kitchen, waddling adorably. Ren bumped into the doorway to the kitchen, as his eyes were closed, letting Nora lead him.
Fortunately, they had the necessary ingredients, so Ren did not have to make a midnight run to try to find algae. He mixed it up, blended it, and poured it into a nice, tall cup -- and stuck a pink bendystraw into it. Nora snatched it from his hands and slurped it up happily, occasionally making a disgusted face. When finished, she flopped against him, humming happily.
“You saved me!” she cried out, reaching up to give him a kiss. “I was mere inches from death, and -- ooh!” She looked down at her stomach. “They kicked!”
Ren, a sleepy smile on his face, pressed a hand to her stomach -- only to have it fly off. “I think they got your strength.”
Nora giggled, and then a thought crossed her mind. “Hey Ren?”
“Yeah?”
“As long as we’re up, can we make pancakes?”
“Is this also life-and-death?” he chuckled, rubbing the last of the sleep out of his eyes.
“Maaaaybe,” she laughed. “Is that a yes?”
“When is it ever a no?” he chuckled, bending down to get a pan out of the cupboard.
“Boop~!” she sang, dancing over to get out the flour.
“Love you, too, lightning bug,” he yawned.
After all, pancakes taste great at 3 AM.
Renora Week Day 1: Childhood Memory Hunger/Generosity/Thunderstruck
In the weeks following Kuroyuri things had not gotten much better for Ren and Nora. As they made their way through Anima they were greeted by bandits, Grimm, and most importantly…hunger. Nora had grown used to the stomach pains. They simply were a reminder she was still alive. A harsh reality for such a small girl with nowhere to turn to until just a few weeks ago. Ren however… Ren was affluent. Spoiled even. He had never known the ache for just a scrap of bread or a drop of water. Often, they would come across small bodies of water in the forests of Anima. These lakes and rivers were full of fresh water and populated by small fish. The two would sharpen sticks with Ren’s knife and attempt to puncture a passing koi or a scuttling crab. On some occasions they were successful… others they would simply drink from the surrounding waters and dream of food. With the hunger came hallucinations. Ren would cry out in the night for his mother and father. Even young Nora knew that his screams and sadness would attract something far worse than they were capable of dealing with. With his whimpers keeping her awake she would place his head in her lap and stroke his hair until he calmed down. This went on until they made a decision. They needed to find other people.
Anima is an eclectic land. Dense forests sit in the shadows of great mountains. Cave systems and scattered villages pepper the landscape. Eventually the two stumbled in to one. Shion village was densely populated with Huntsmen, innkeepers, merchants, tourists… and beggars. Nobody either of the two recognized from Kuroyuri but homeless folks all the same. Unfortunately, this meant that the more well-off residents of Shion would see them as just parts of the landscape. They would look at them as if they weren’t even there and Ren and Nora who were small, covered in dirt and grime, ratty haired, and thin fell in to the same category. Realizing the villagers would be no help they resorted to digging through garbage. They found food scraps which they decided to only eat as a last resort, a tarp with only a few small holes in it, and a metal rod which they decided they could combine with the tarp to form a makeshift tent. Satisfied with their haul they departed Shion village passing people who averted their eyes as they walked by. Everyone but a tall blonde man who was escorting his wife and young son out of a bakery and through the village. He had camping gear on his back and a bag of bread in one hand and his wife’s hand in the other. He knelt to be on the level of the two children. They were no older than his boy. Without a word he handed them both some fresh baked bread and nodded at them before walking away. The two looked at this blessing as if it were made of gold and looked back at the man. They couldn’t even thank him they were in such shock. His wife followed praising him for his kindness but their son, as yellow haired as his father, looked back at the two. His blue eyes full of concern. He wondered who they were? Where did they come from? Where will they go?
At the peaks of the Anima mountains you could see for miles around. Some say you can see Haven Academy from the peak of the tallest. Ren and Nora needed to scout the area. They needed to know where they were and which direction to head in. And so, one particularly cloudy day at the base of a mountain that towered over them like the giants of old… they began to climb. Ren was hardly a climber. After only a third of the way up the mountain his fingers were blistered and his back ached. But Nora would continually move him forward. Sometimes even climbing back down to his level to ensure he was okay. Even when it started to rain. The water made the rocks slick but as it fell they opened their dented canteens to fill with the lifegiving fluid as it poured from the heavens. After hours of climbing, multiple slips, and few close calls later, the two children reached the summit. Rain poured above them, and thunder bellowed like an angry god, furious at them for entering his domain. With the deluge around them it became impossible to see beyond the peak. Their vantage point lost the two decide to make camp and wait out the storm. With no caves in sight they resort to their tarp and pole. Ren began unfolding as Nora began to scout around for a place to stick the metal rod. She found a perfect divot in the ground just deep enough to provide stability. She raised the pole to stab it in to the ground and suddenly thunder clapped again and a bolt of lightning streaked from the clouds connecting with the rod and Nora. Ren turned just in time to see the last person he had in this world engulfed in a surge of electricity and power. He screamed. She screamed. The world went white….
Nora awoke hours later. The light pitter patter of rain taps against their tent. Her head resting in Ren’s lap. He was asleep, tear marks streaking down his dirt covered face. His hand rested in her hair like hers had so many nights before. She remembered everything. The rain. The thunder. The pole. The lightning…The lightning? Shouldn’t she be dead? She slowly rose and exited the tent, careful not to wake her companion. The worst of the storm had subsided and a light drizzle sprinkles across the mountain peak. A rainbow hovered over Anima and Nora could see in all directions. She held her hands up to her face. They were trembling…no… shaking… They shook with the power of the fiercest of skies. She turned to a nearby rock formation. A voice within her echoes from the back of her mind. A voice that was somewhat familiar. As if she had known it was there all her life and yet she had never heard it speak. It whispered one word that sends a crackle of electricity down her spine. “Strike.” And with that the tiny ginger balled her dirty hand into a fist and punched the rock with all her might. Lightning arced around her but it wasn’t blue… it was… pink? The blast shattered the rock formation as thunder broke through the clear skies. From behind her Ren stumbled out of the tent, breathing heavily. He looked at her across the peak surrounded by shattered rock. She stepped up to him and rocked back and forth on the balls of her feet. Energy ran through her like a current through a power line. She felt incredible. She felt strong. She felt things she didn’t know she could feel. She smiled at Ren, who looked relieved to see she was up and walking. She took a finger, still sparking with electricity, and tapped it against his nose. His black hair stood on end and the purple streak pointed straight in the air. Her digit still on his face, she began to giggle. “Boop.”

Calm Before the Storm
“Get the hell out of my trash can, orphan rat! Go eat someone else’s trash!” A man cried out as he threw a worn-down shoe at the young Nora Valkyrie, hitting her smack dab in the middle of her face.
Nora looked down at the muddy ground, her small, tattered clothes, which easily soaked up the rain that fell above her frail, helpless form. She’d dropped the food she was eating at the moment, which was a piece of crusty, dirty bread, almost completely covered in a thin layer of white and green mold.
Then a sharp, stinging feeling surged across the young Nora’s face, which made her shed a few tears as she immediately ran away. She moved a bit slower, though this was mostly because the mud was covering her small feet with every step she took.
“And don’t come back, you worthless little dog!” Nora heard the man declared, before returning to his restaurant.
Reaching a small, narrow alleyway, Nora sat in her little box. It wasn’t a particularly small box or a really large box, just a box. But it was the box that Nora Valkyrie made her home and where she rest her head every night, and that was enough for the little girl.
Curling up in the box, Nora’s stomach began to rumble. Her body was thin, too thin for a girl her age. In fact, you could see her ribcage sticking out, which made most people gag in horror rather than sad or sympathetic.
But there was something else. Nora had felt weak throughout the entire day. Not just a weak from being tired and hungry, but a different kind of weak. She could barely move her legs, and her arms seemed devoid of energy. She touched her stomach, her eyes beginning to close, and her vision beginning to blur.
“There aren’t any stars out tonight, that’s too bad.” A voice sighed from beyond the alleyway, though it made Nora weakly get up from her box.
Getting up, her blue eyes immediately met a young boys. But he wasn’t like the other boys in the little village. The other boys just ignored her or laughed at this girl, but this boy didn’t. He stared right back at the orphaned girl, seeming to be gentle and soft.
“A-are you alright? I’m Lie Ren, by the way.” Lie Ren introduced himself to the young Nora, slowly approaching her.
“Do you have any food? I’m hungry…” Nora Valkyrie whined softly, collapsing into her box as she tried to keep her eyes open.
Suddenly, Nora felt herself being lifted. But not by some divine force, but by the arms of Lie Ren, who grunted as he held the young girl in his arms. Putting the young Nora on his shoulder, Lie Ren began to run, heading off into the town, the young girl in his protection.
Waking up, Nora saw herself in a hospital bed, an IV sending liquids into her still weakened body. At first, there was no one around her, but just the boy. The same boy from last night, Lie Ren.
“Ah, you’re awake. I made some food for you. Thank goodness, because I thought you were really going to be gone.” Lie Ren sighed, giving her a few plates of food.
Nora inspected all of the food, noticing they were all home-made dishes. There was orange chicken, steamed dumplings, and even a little sponge cake. Stuffing some of the dumplings in her mouth, salty tears beginning to roll down her face.
“It’s all so good! You’re an amazing cook!” Nora cried out, pushing the food away and immediately hugging Lie Ren. Blushing a bit, Lie Ren embraced the redheaded girl, smiling as his warmth became hers.
Renora Week! Day 1: Childhood Memory! Ren and Nora as kids decided to climb up a tree (for reasons) and they had a laugh as Nora acted like a sloth!
“Don’t worry, you’ll be safe with me. No one will hurt you.”
