FAQ
Replicarter thoughts (again lol) (also I did not read this after typing it just ignore if there's typos)
y'know I actually don't think you can just turn anyone into a Replicator duplicate. Like if you could then they fire SURE would've tried it multiple times. Even in Atlantis the "replicator duplicates" of the team were just regular humans with nanites in them to keep them healthy.
So Sam is the only time it's ever happened. And the replicator Sam doesn't just look like her, she IS her. A bunch of pieces stripped out to make her more like what Fifth wanted her to be, but still unmistakably Sam.
I think a lot of that is because of what happened in 04x20 Entity, like she spent at least some time as a computerised consciousness and figured out how to control the base computer at least a little bit, making text appear on the screens and such. I think that experience made it easier for her to integrate with the Replicator network and probably even made it possible at all.
But on top of all of that I think fundamentally Sam is just more compatible with a digital system than perhaps any other human character on the show. Kind of getting into headcanon territory now but we know whenever she grieves or gets hurt she isolates herself (end of 02x02 In the Line of Duty), and I think she does that when she's stressed or worried too. There's a lot of jokes about her never leaving her lab or not sleeping or staying on the base all the time but - why wouldn't she?
Everyone expects her to have the answers to everything, to come up with the last-minute solution, and you can see it as the series goes on everyone gets less and less surprised when she does have that last-minute plan to save the planet. I think it becomes so expected that she forces herself to be that person they think she is, to have every single answer to every single question. She can't go home yet, there's a chance she'll need these hyperdrive specs she's memorising. "Sorry, can't make it to after-work drinks, I've got to finish studying the new naqahdah generators."
I think she's so isolated from everyone in her personal life by that point that she really is just that bit less human, she's spent more time with machinery than she has with real people and she just understands electronic systems better than she understands her teammates. Psychologically she already thinks like replicators might, analytically and logically, and there's less of the human in her to take out before she's turned into a Replicator duplicate.
As well as that, right before she got duplicated she lost Janet, definitively her closest friend and arguably more than that, and that much trauma absolutely put her in a bad place for a long time. (We ignore that the series just moved on like nothing happened I'm ignoring that terrible writing decision). So on top of being already pretty isolated and focused only on her work, she's in one of the worst places she's ever been and not doing well at all. That's the perfect state for Fifth to capture when making a version of Sam that has all her kindness, empathy, and compassion stripped away.
Also, after meeting Replicarter and realising just how little Fifth had to change to make her duplicate, I think she tries more and more to stop isolating herself and have a better social balance in her life. It does feel like her s8-s10 character is a little better at being human than she did beforehand.
