I like that Daniel, Jack, and Teal'c all have some devastating backstory that led them to join sg-1. Jack was suicidal after his son died, and this is really the only thing that gives his life meaning, Daniel is looking for Sha're, Teal'c wants to free his people... But Sam? She's doing this for the love of the game. She lost her mom at an early age, and struggles at times to connect with people, but overall the reason she joined sg-1 was to do cool crap and learn.

I 100% agree, for everyone else joining SG1 and the Stargate program wasn't really a choice - they all lost someone or something, and SG1 is their path to recovery. Their stories are hopeful, for the most part. Jack begins to forgive himself and move on, Daniel is vindicated for his theories and gains a new understanding of the universe through ascension, and Teal'c frees his people and can finally have a life amongst them.

Sam, however, it's a choice. She doesn't have to join the Stargate program, she could've had an incredible career as an astronaut or physicist, but she chooses the Stargate program. And rather than gaining everything through it, she loses so much of herself. The workaholic with no real social life ("Ascension"), she's only shown to have a life outside the SGC in one episode, with a man who she realises was never someone she actually wanted. She loses her father and one of her closest friends (Janet) through the gate. And by the end of it all she's saved three galaxies and furthered earth's understanding of technology by hundreds of years, but for her personally? She still knows nothing but her work.

And that's not to say that's not rewarding! It's very clear that's always the most important thing to her! I just find it heartbreaking the amount the others have these amazing personal stories of recovery, but all her victories are for the world and not herself, whilst she lost so much through the gate.

And both times Ghost!Daniel literally rolls up with a can-do attitude and a Hang In There cat poster. And just straight up saves their lives through the Power of Friendship.
