So the Oropo OVA is weird as fuck.
And I don't mean just the fact that it's a convoluted mess of writing issues, contradictions, and pointless Eliotrope introductions that are actually irrelevant in the long run. No, I think I've covered all that extensively before.
I'm talking about the fact that they're suddenly using nicknames.
Now, for some unfathomable reason, most of the time, Oropo is called "Oro" by his team, while he called Echo "Ma Belle" in the middle of their fight with Chibi and Grougal. And I'm like, why? Where does that come from????
Because correct me if I'm wrong, since I haven't watched season 3 in French, but I'm pretty sure the use of nicknames is pretty much nonexistent then????
I mean, if Oropo didn't even call his fucking lover "Beautiful" after literally having sex, and she doesn't use any terms of endearment despite all her flirting and gentle reassurances, then what's the point in introducing it during the OVA??? Sure, it'd be a nice call-back to season 3, something that'd make us go, "Aw, they've been using those pet names for centuries...", if only they actually used them in season 3.
But they didn't.
I swear, it's like they tried to really hammer in the fact that Oropo is super close to his team/underlings simply because they have a cute name for him. Uh, let me just say that if that is the case, then you should have done it during the 13-episode season, with all the friends Oropo supposedly died for, instead of the 44-minute action-packed nonsensical special where he sends his other friends to their death.
Because the closeness angle fails the moment you remember we're talking about a manipulative, entitled clone with an Oedipus complex that cheated on his centuries-long partner and lied to the people who adored and admired him and followed him for ages.
Seriously, what are these people even thinking sometimes...
