Sabah CM hails MCA, Gerakan rejoining Cabinet
KOTA KINABALU, June 26:
Sabah Government welcomes the recent reshuffling of the Federal Cabinet and expressed happiness that their political friends in MCA and Gerakan are now part of the decision-making group.
Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman, in saying this, added the Cabinet now was picture perfect and reflected the 1Malaysia concept with the addition of leaders from the Chinese community.
“Initially, they were reluctant to accept positions in the Cabinet, but we are glad that they have put that behind and are now part of the pact.
“This will further strengthen the existing Federal Cabinet alliances and I am sure it will benefit the people as a whole.
“It is also our hope that all Barisan Nasional component parties will take their place and serve the nation and people.”
He said this after presenting Yayasan Sabah’s State Scholarship Award to 25 recipients at the Tun Mustapha Tower, today.
Musa, meanwhile, urged Malaysians who excelled educationally abroad to come home and serve their country and people.
He said although he sounded like a broken record, he stressed that the services of students who pursued their education abroad would be valuable to the country, especially in further developing the nation.
“We would like to avoid brain drain which means our bright citizens staying put abroad instead of returning home to serve the nation. It will be such a waste of good talents.”
Musa said the country, in particular Sabah, had gone through transformation economically, thus the need for more bright and skilled manpower.
“Your (students abroad) expertise is valuable to the nation and we need you here,” he said, while reminding those who are pursuing their studies outside Malaysia to come back and work in the country.
On another development, Musa urged people to be calm, especially those in Kunak, as Op Gasak was just an ongoing operation being carried out to ensure Sabah was safe from any threat.
Looking Back: The Reshuffling of the Ministers
Every once in a while Zuma throws a curve ball and decides to reshuffle his cabinet. He fires and hires and does it suddenly. His most recent reshuffle was back in July and the new ministers were sworn in in a ceremony at the President's guest house on July 10th.
This assignment was stressful. We found out last minute about the ceremony and I was the only photographer around. I drove in the same car as the deputy editor of the M&G and we left late. Arriving at the gate we didn't have accreditation so we had to talk our way in (Again, I still find it amazing how easy it is to get close to President Zuma!). I was carrying a tripod and video camera for a reporter who was supposed to show up to film the ceremony and an interview that was going to happen after. She and the other photographer who was supposed to meet us there never made it so I was stuck doing the video and photo. It was STRESSFUL! Because we showed up late I missed the first minister being sworn in and then I had to scramble to try to set up the tripod and video camera.
I was tired, stressed and sweaty by the end but it all worked out somehow. Here's the resulting multimedia piece! It was my first time ever filming an interview.
Modise dismisses Hattighn's criticism
The strides that the provincial government will make in the coming months will show its resolve to shift gear for faster delivery, North West Premier Thandi Modise said in dismissing criticism levelled by Provincial Democratic Alliance Leader Chris Hattingh against the cabinet reshuffle announced last week.
Hattingh’s criticisms are a desperate attempt to distort and exaggerate the reasons that necessitated the changes in the Executive Council (Exco), the North West Provincial Government said in a statement issued on Monday.
In reaction to the criticisms, Premier Modise said that though it was expected that Hattingh would as a reactionary who opposes everything for the sake of opposing, the extent to which he stoops low for political mileage is pathetic.
“Political expediency and driving a wedge among ruling party members matter more to Hattingh than good governance and service delivery hence he is dead silent while we wage war against corruption syndicates. The people of our province do not have short memories and are not ignorant of the challenges we are facing as Hattingh thinks they do.
They and not Hattingh will hold us accountable to our commitment that where public funds are found to have been misappropriated, steps would be taken to recoup every cent.” emphasised Modise.
She said that eliminating hang ups that the DA wanted unresolved for it to use as ammunition in the coming elections has frustrated Hattingh’s party hence it is clutching for straws and targeting Exco members with speculative and untested allegations to remain relevant.
Premier Modise reiterated that the appointment of three new members to the Executive Councilshould not be misinterpreted to suggest that the recalled members were found guilty of any wrongdoing as matters they were allegedly involved in have not been concluded.
She stressed that all of them executed their tasks with distinction and that none of the allegations against them have been proved or disproved.
NW Cabinet Reshuffle: Criminal charges and incompetency overlooked - Hattingh
The NW DA has noted the long overdue NW cabinet reshuffle and once again is appalled, not only by some of the appointments, but also by the phony motivations provided by Premier Modise.
The Premier dismissed Louisa Mabe from her cabinet, just more than a year after she was removed from the Finance portfolio to put NW Education back on track. This was allegedly because of Mabe’s involvement in R16million irregularities. This motivation sounds hollow given that the MEC for Public Works and Roads, Raymond Elisha, remains in the cabinet even when his Department is implicated in tender irregularities, maladministration and Supreme Court cases involving hundreds of millions – as a result his Roads maintenance and construction function had been abdicated to the National Department.
The reasons provided for the dismissal of the former MEC for Social Development, Mosetsanagape Mokomele-Mothibi included her abuse of member’s privileges in attending the ANC’s Mangaung conference using public funds, should normally be applauded. However by the Premier’s own admission four other members of her Executive - Magome Masike, Raymond Elisha, Louisa Mabe and Motlalepule Rosho - did exactly the same during the Mangaung Conference. Masike, Rosho and Elisha did not even get a slap on the wrists, nor did they repay the abused funds.
Premier Thandi Modise’s statement that her focus in the reshuffling is on “accelerating service delivery and entrenching good governance” sounds hollow if the appointment of the new MEC for Local Government is considered. Manketsi Tlhape was the former Mayor of Tswaing, before she left under a cloud the Tswaing Municipality and administration collapsed, was put under a Section 139 administration, a HAWKS investigation and a forensic investigation was also launched. In addition a widespread withholding of rates and taxes in reaction to the Tswaing maladministration, non-delivery and abuse of public funds was implemented. The outcome of these investigations, true to the NW standard of non-accountability and secrecy, still remains a closely guarded secret.
After the 2011 Local Government elections, Tlhape was tagged by the ANC to become the Ngaka Modiri Molema Municipality’s Executive Mayor – however the NMMDM ANC Councillors, based on Tlhape’s unsuitability for public office, defied ANC instructions for more than two years by refusing to elect her into that position.
The appointment of Manketsi Tlhape as the NW Member of the Executive responsible for Local Government is an insult to the people of the NW, all increasingly victims of collapsing Local Government service delivery – something that Tlhape has become synonymous with.
It is clear that the reshuffling has more to do with political repositioning than service delivery. The new cabinet continue to lack credibility, expertise and with less than a year left of the current term will certainly not be able to change the appalling NW delivery and accountability crisis.
