Orthopaedics vs Radiology - How Iām Deciding
So this is what Iāve decided: If I can achieve a massive accomplishment within the next 2-3 years (hint: itās something besides scoring highly on step 1), then I will pursue ortho. If I fail or am unable to do it, Iāll be gunning for radiology. Iām still praying about which specialty God would have me do, but I havenāt heard anything yet, so this is the decision algorithm Iāll be using until I hear from God on the matter.

Urgen mÔs plazas de formación sanitaria especializada (MIR)
Hey, I know this is in Spanish but we are trying to let the Spanish governtment know that we need more positions for doctors to acces the residency program, so If you could help me signing the petition it would mean a lot.
As some of you know, Iāve been struggling during years to succeed in this exam who grants access to the residency program in Spain.Ā
Thereās currently 15.000 doctors who apply for a total of 6.570 positions, that means that this year 8.600 doctors wonāt be able to access it.
Iām one of those doctors. Please, help with you signature if you can.
Thank You.
Itās who you surround yourself with...
I know thereās a bunch of 4th years out there doing interviews and guys if I have to give you ONE piece of advice itās make sure you pick a program where the people you work with are a major plus and not an eh or negative part.
Thatās what I did for both my transitional year and my ophtho program and I am so so thankful. Obviously other factors went into my choice but when it came down to deciding between where to rank places that were closely matched, the āvibeā was how I did that.
Itās paying off beyond my imagination while Iām on a rotation that is rumored to be pretty damn tough and Iām having a blast. A blast doing general medicine wards. As a future ophthalmologist.
My team is the bomb and we take great care of our patients and have fun doing it. And I had fantastic support during my two weeks of night float hell and in the chaotic ICU. I truly wouldnāt have made it through as mentally stable and ready to tackle the next rotation if it hadnāt been for the awesome co residents and attendings Iāve worked with. Itās hard to get down about difficult patients when you have people to share the load with and commiserate. This program is truly a big family that Iāll be more than a little sad to leave next year.
Donāt overlook this aspect of your future program, I beg you. Trust your gut.
So you've had what felt like a good interview and think you may have found the residency program of your dreams ā or at least one that won't give you nightmares. What's a nice medical student like you to do to let them know you you're interested? Here's a plan to help you not blow it.

Dubai Just Rewired Its Golden Visa Machine ā Hereās What Changes for Property Investors
Dubai did not change the price of entry for its property-linked Golden Visaābut it has quietly rebuilt the machinery that decides who gets in. In April, Dubaiās General Directorate of Identity and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA Dubai) and the Dubai Land Department (DLD) signed a memorandum of understanding that collapses three real estateālinked residency products into [ā¦]
⤠Dubai has streamlined its property-linked Golden Visa application process by consolidating three residency programs under a single administrative channel managed by GDRFA, without altering the AED 2 million property value requirement. ⤠A recent policy change removed the 50% upfront payment rule, making financing and payment schedules irrelevant as long as the property valuation meets the AED 2 million threshold, thus broadening investor access. ⤠While real estate tokenization pilots are underway, they are not yet recognized for residency purposes, and the program's efficiency also presents a risk of large-scale visa revocations, highlighting the evolving nature of Dubai's capital attraction strategy.
USCE for IMGs: A Key Step Toward Residency Success
For International Medical Graduates (IMGs) willing to practice medicine in the United States, getting their United States Clinical Experience (USCE) is considered to be one of the key achievements on the way to the successful USCE Match. USCE is an important part of an applicantās medical portfolio and can greatly increase the probability of an IMGās successful match into a residency program.Ā
What is USCE?
The term USCE refers to hands-on clinical training or observation in a health care facility in the United States. These can be clinical rotations, observerships, externships, or research internships in a hospital or medical center in the United States. Currently, such knowledge enables IMGs to get familiarized with the standard of practices, procedures and the patientsā care which is the structural prerequisite of the U.S. medical system.
Why is USCE Important for IMGs?
Familiarity with U.S. Healthcare System: The purpose of USCE is to enable IMGs to obtain the required exposure to the workings of the American system as well as to orient them to norms of medical professionalism, medical etiquette and patient communication in the United States.Ā
Networking Opportunities: While pursuing their USCE, the IMGs get an opportunity to interact with American physicians and residency program directors. During these times it is beneficial for an IMG to receive strong Letters of Recommendation (LoRs) from faculties or supervisors.Ā
Competitiveness in the Match Process: USCE is a critical factor that residency programs use to assess an applicantās clinical skills. Medical schools and universities in the US & Canada and professional bodies show that IMGs have a strong intention to meet U.S Medical Standards, which serves as an additional strength when competing with a huge pool of candidates.
How to Gain USCE as an IMG?
There are several ways IMGs can use to get clinical experience in the United States. Some of the most common options include:Ā
Clinical Rotations: These are generally clinical opportunities within which IMGs practice providing care to patients under the supervision of practitioners that are licensed in the United States of America.Ā
Observerships: For those who are not yet licensed, or not permitted to carry out anyway clinical tasks, an observership is an opportunity to follow the American physicians and study, how the patientās care is being provided.Ā
Externships: More extensive than observerships, externships may allow IMGs to directly participate in clinical activities under supervision.
What Skills Should IMGs Have for Their USCE
For IMGs seeking to apply for residency programs in the United States, obtaining a USCE is an essential thing. It is not only useful to obtain this certification with a view toward the application for residency but also it offers the candidate an insight into the United Statesā medical system, methods, and patients. To become successful in USCE, IMGs should follow some common set of skills which are likely to be acknowledged by the U.S. medical professionals and organizations.Ā
Communication Skills: USCE entails direct interaction with patients and other physicians and interdisciplinary teams, modelling communication plays a crucial role in the training process. Ability to speak and write clearly plays an important role particularly for taking patient histories, discussing treatment plans, and documenting medical notes. Effective communication pays a nod to patient relations and makes it easy for medical practitioners to ensure clarity in medical documentation.Ā
Medical Knowledge and Clinical Skills: Even though, IMGs pursue their education from different backgrounds, they are required to prove strong clinical knowledge during their USCE. Knowledge of the US medical practices, guidelines, as well as protocols is essential. IMGs should be proficient in the aspects of performing physical exams, interpreting the diagnostic results, as well as formulating the differential diagnoses while being open to learning and adapting to the U.S. system.Ā
Adaptability and Teamwork: The U.S. healthcare environment is fast-paced and collaborative. IMGs should adapt to multiple clinical scenarios, and should excel in team work. Self-motivated behavior, positive interrelations with residents, attendings, nurses, and other members of the staff are significant factors.
Professionalism and Cultural Sensitivity: IMGs must understand and respect the cultural diversity of the U.S. patient population and have professional patient related ethics & conduct. Professionalism, such as being polite, always on time and bearing a good working attitude are essential attributes that reflect well during USCE.
USCE is a crucial part of the residency application process for IMGs. Not only does it equip the applicants with the practical experience in the clinical system of the USA but also develop some great professional contacts as well as make the applicant more competitive in USCE Match. Pursuing USCE opportunities early can mark a lot of difference in an IMG's journey toward securing a residency spot in the North American country.
