Dublin Core

Am I the only one who thinks “Cottage Core” and the like when they hear anything -core? 

Which essentially sums up my first thoughts on Dublin Core - a serious framework for resource description:

(This might seem a bit technical for my type of blog but using properly defined resource description frameworks can really help whenever you work with (digital) resources. Highly recommend.)

So we’ve learned about RDF and practiced making a graph to better understand how it works (looks an awful lot like a mindmap) and mine looked like a boat!

Dublin Core (DC) vs Resource Description Framework (RDF)

DC has 15 elements that are used in metadata to describe networked resources.  RDF does not have specific elements that are used to describe the networked resources.  Instead it has a model that can be used to define any element the user wishes.  The model is comprised of what the object is, an attribute of that object, and the value of the attribute.

Metadata and Multimedia

As it can be difficult to describe a picture or sounds with words, the metadata used to describe multimedia tell what it contains.  It will include the basic of what type of media (text, image, sound) and then go on to describe the content of the media itself (color, shape, pitch, etc.).

The problem with grand visions of the Semantic Web was that they all assumed a top-down structure. One wickedly clever set of rules to wrangle every fact. A global ontology. It didn't make sense. While we're not sure how Dan's vision will actually work at the end of the day we nevertheless agree that a universal, top-down, global ontology won't be the base the semantic web will be built upon. Instead it will be based on multiple, buttom-up, decentral and highly flexible ontologies, some of them specific to just one user, others managed and maintened by groups of users sharing a common interest.
