Hey! I was wondering what you need to study to become a librarian?? Like, which degrees do you need? Sorry for bothering you with dumb questions lol
no don’t worry! no question is a dumb question. (also i apologize if you sent this message a while ago, i was on a zoom call with my friend!)
in order to have the title of “librarian” (at least in the US), you have to have a Master’s Degree in Library Science (MLS) or a Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science (MLIS). a lot of the course work has to do with collection development, programming, research, and IT work. people with these degrees can go on to do things outside of librarianship (you know those title screens on DVDs? they’re usually created by people with these degrees because they understand how to make things in a user-friendly fashion).
with the way that libraries have evolved over the past decade or so, there’s more of an emphasis on community involvement, technology, and interactive programming. plus those who work in libraries have to be competent in lots of resources for their patrons, from Google Suite to Microsoft to navigating the unemployment websites and resources for parents, homeschooled kids, and homeless patrons. since you need a Master’s for this, and to enter Master’s programs you need to have a Bachelor’s, many librarians have different backgrounds. the most common undergraduate degrees for librarians are education, child development, computer science, english (which is what my undergrad degree is in), and history.
and since there’s so many different kinds of librarians from public librarianship to children’s librarianship, law librarianship and academic librarianship, there’s a huge range of the type of patrons and the type of services you could provide in a career in this.
there’s a huge issue with whiteness and race in librarianship because of the strict rules that librarians have to have a Master’s degree, and a lot of people are fighting to eliminate this rule because it excludes a lot of people of color from the profession, which means that the collections we develop might not serve every patron that comes in.
if you have any more questions about librarianship or working in libraries or the kinds of things i’ve worked on as someone who works in libraries, please do not hesitate to ask! i love talking about my job and my career path because this is something i’ve been working towards for a long time.
(also sorry for the long response!)
