         faded yellow sneakers stumble to a stop, arms tightening their grip around the books clutched to her chest. don’t have to tell her twice -- hazel eyes widen, vaguely recognizing the red & blue that paints the news in varied lights. annette is too shocked to move. (yes, of course, this spider guy is real. sure, the news isn’t super reliable, but they have to get what they say from some modicum of reality.) she’s still a bit surprised. usually the weirdos in the city aren’t good or bad, they’re just ... odd. but this is clearly a good & bad situation. the curly-haired girl manages to fumble one step backwards, words failing. she should leave. she really, really should leave. but it’s sort of like watching a train crash -- she just wants to see what happens.

" oh ! yeah, that'd be great. " she feigns indifference & a nonchalant attitude, though she's anything but. waiting for mj in peter's apartment felt like a completely & totally normal thing to do. & it would be ! if she didn't have a massive crush on him & she hadn't known for a fact that mj wouldn't be back for at least a few more hours.

it wasn't that she was trying to lie to him, or deceive him to gain an upper hand by spending more alone time with him. i mean, that was kind of exactly what she'd done but she didn't see it that way. her mind was clouded by hopeless romanticism & anxiety. not only did she feel a little unstable when she was really crushing on a guy, but liking somebody like him ? sweet, attentive, supportive, genuinely all around a good guy ?? it made her mind race. was she good enough for him ? would he like her back or was she too messy & dramatic for his taste ? she had no idea the kind of person he'd go for, & though she'd never intentionally change herself for a man at this point in her life, it made her heart sink to think he would be turned off by who she was as a person.

pushing down her feelings & rambling thoughts, manny took a stride into his house. at least she had one thing she knew was in her favor. one of her favourite going out dresses that she'd chosen partially for her & mj's girls night out, & partially because she knew she'd be going to peter's house to meet her when they were both free. note the blue accents mirroring many of his commonly worn shirts & flannels. & who knows, maybe girls night out could turn into, girls & one guy who manny just happened to think was a diamond in the rough.

" do you have work tonight ? - or plans or something ? " she smiled & let out a slightly awkward laugh as she hovered around the kitchen trying to play it cooler than that " wanna have a drink while we wait ? i mean i'm already in bar hopping mode so you know, why not ? " eyes flutter as she gestures to her look, all dolled up in black & blue, clearly anticipating a long night of fun with her best friend, & hopefully her best friends childhood best friend.

MAYBE   IT’S   THE   FACT   THAT,   THOUGH   THEY’RE   NOT   SO   FAR   FROM   NEW   YORK,   IT’S   A   LOT   DIFFERENT   THAN   GOTHAM.         maybe   that’s   why   this   masked-up   superhero   looks   at   things   like   they’re   on   different   planets.      but   maybe   it’s   just   jason   that’s   the   problem      —      that’s   usually   it,   so   why   not   here?      why   not   now,   with   this   bundle   of   sunshine?      all   the   same,   red   hood   rolls   his   eyes   behind   his   helmet.            “      you   quotin’   taylor   swift   right   now,   man?      ”            it’s   like   being   on   patrol   with   dickie-bird,   he   swears.

       the   words   sit   heavy   on   her   chest,   pressing   deep   into   old   wounds   she’d   yet   to   close   &   numbing   them   quietly   as  they   sit.   there’s   a   breath   caught   in   her   throat   that   accompanies   the   lump   that   develops   there   as   her   eyes   fill   with   unshed   tears.   she   blinks   them   away   as   quickly   as   she   can   to   keep   the   vision   of   him   clear.   HE   WAS   SO   GOOD.   this   boy   before   her   who   had   been   to   hell   &   back,   and   here   he   was   baring   a   heart   of   gold   to   her.       ❛ peter,   you          ❜       she   attempts   to   swallow   that   emotion   &   quell   the   quiver   in   her   voice   before   she   continues.       ❛ .  .  .  you   have   been   through   so   much.   more   than   you   ever   deserved.   more   than   most   grown   adults   can   handle,   you   know   that? ❜       brows   raise   &   she   wipes   hastily   at   the   tear   that   escapes   the   corner   of   her  eye. 

         ❛          and   you   were   never   supposed   to   be   mine. ❜       it   was   a   fact   she   reminded   herself   of   often.   this   wasn’t   supposed   to   be   the   way   his   life   panned   out.   she   was  supposed   to   be   the   fun  aunt   that   brought   the   best   birthday   gifts   to   the   party.   the   aunt   that    held   onto   his   secrets   &   cheered   the   loudest   at   his   wedding.   LIFE   HAD   OTHER   PLANS.   she   reaches   out   to   touch   the   side   of   his   face,   thumb   brushing   gently   over   his   cheek   as   the   image   of   the   little   boy   her   &   ben   had   welcomed   into   their   home   years   ago   crosses   her   mind.   she’d   only   ever   wanted   to   do   right   by   that   boy,   and   she   wasn’t   sure   how   to   communicate   to   him   that   those   words   meant   more   to   her   than   anything   else   in   this   world.       ❛ but   you   are.   and   i   would   do   everything           i   mean   that,   EVERYTHING           all   over   again   if   you   needed   me   to. ❜       hand   falls   from   his   face,   but   only   to   wrap   around   his   shoulders   to   pull   him   into   a   much   needed   embrace.       ❛ you   are   the   best   thing   that’s   ever   happened   to   me,   too.   you’re   stuck   with   me. ❜

          she   was   a   few   mere   steps   from   the   door   when   she’d   heard   him.   it   seemed   to   be   an   afterthought,   a   warning   he’d   thrown   out   before   she   was   out   of   reach.   it   sounded   a  lot   like   something   she’d   said   to   him   many   times.   she   smiles   in   spite   of   herself   &   opens   the   coat   closet,   slipping   on   the   first   jacket   she   finds.         ❛ wow,   my   own   personal   meteorologist. ❜       she   calls   in   return,   the   smirk   on   her   lips   seeping   into   the   tone   of   her   voice.   she   peeks   around   the   corner   as   she   adjusts   the   collar,   flipping   her   hair   out   of   the   confines   of   the   jacket   and    over   her   shoulder.       ❛ thank   you   for   lookin’   out   for   me.  ❜

          "   ah  -  okay ,   okay ,   sitting down now .   ”     it’s strange ,   being on the receiving end of comfort and gentle reassurance from his nephew instead of the other way around .   but things just aren’t the way they used to be now ;   ben’s body is not the way it used to be ,   and he’s still adjusting and coming to terms with how he can simply turn around and feel that white-hot burning pain .   he’s still adjusting to how just sitting up can completely take the wind out of him .   so when peter begins to guide him back down onto the couch with gentle hands and gentle words ,   instructing him to breathe deep ,   he can’t even argue against it .   it hurts too damn much to argue .     “   i’ll up your allowance if you promise not to tell your aunt that i did that .   ”
