I didn’t know how to make memory conform to a narrative arc. There were discrete scenes and moments that were very vivid to me, but I struggled with how to connect one to another in some linear, continuous way. I remember expressing this frustration to one of my professors. She said, 'Write the scene, hit return a few times, and keep going.' So that was my solution in the end. The return key.

How do Craigslist and others insert <br> when users hit the return key in their posts?
How do Craigslist and others insert when users hit the return key in their posts?
When I post something to Craigslist or to select other websites, I hit the return key twice to start a new paragraph. I don’t need to manually insert line-break elements. Craigslist has code which recognizes the double tap of the carriage Return key as the start of a new paragraph and inserts the break elements for me.
How do they do that? Would like to create a website which allows…

Probably useless info
If you ever hear someone refer to the "Enter" key on a PC keyboard as the "Return" key, they aren't actually wrong or mistaken.
Calling it the Return key is from the days of typewriters. The Return key (which was in the same part of the keyboard as the Enter key takes up now), was used after typing a line, to return the carriage - or, the part of the typewriter that held the paper - to it's original position, scrolling just enough for the next line to be started.
The Enter keys seems to have been renamed, for most uses, because it now enters information, instead of returning a physical part to it's original place. Though, you can still get the Return key effect in many word processing or page layout software programs that we have today.
I don't know if this is universal, but at least many Mac and Sun Workstation products still have the key named as "Return" on their keyboards.
Dismiss the Keyboard when Return key is Pressed
This is the code for dismissing the keyboard when the Return key is pressed. This is implemented on a UITextField.
In the header file, create the IBAction method below:
- (IBAction)textFieldDoneEditing:(id)sender;
Then in the implementation file, add this:
- (IBAction)textFieldDoneEditing:(id)sender { [sender resignFirstResponder]; }
You can also assign custom code inside this method i.e. press a login button whenever the Return key is pressed. After doing all of those, go to Interface Builder and link the Did End on Exit event to the UITextField.

anybody who has ever met me and even a lot of people who have not, know that i'm not a morning person. generally i sleep with my phone off, but it will auto turn-on in the morning at around 9 on a weekday and 11 on a weekend. so anyway, my phone may be swtiched on but i can tell you that i sure as hell am not ready to wake up. i just like to be reachable when the day starts, basically in case of emergency. because i'm paranoid.
here's the thing, i don't mind people messaging me in the morning...i actually like waking up to something to read. but please, can you GIVE THE RETURN KEY A BREAK? i can sleep through my whatsapp notification sound once. twice i'll stir a bit. three times and i'll open one eye. four times and i will actually consider turning my phone into a weapon in order to kill myself. just merge what you want to say. merging is great.
starting a new line for 'lol' or '?' should not be allowed. phones should be smarter than that. if you type 'lol' and hit return, you should get this...
DID YOU MEAN? "[insert something funny] lol."
