“Because Summer's still alive in this version I knew I wanted to do the inverse Summer cape for Ruby. The inside is white and the outside is red, versus Summer's Cape where the outside is white and the inside is red. A nice simple, but noticeable difference from Canon Ruby with the all red cape.”
“Ruby's whole reversed fate is that Summer is still alive. Hence why her cape now sports the white on the inside, mirroring Summer's own white cape with the red inside.”
Pink - Match Neo / Summer’s Influence:
“With the pink on Ruby I wanted to keep the primarily darker palette with her boots and skirt. I still wanted her to look like the Ruby Rose we recognize, but went with pink as her shirt color because it's red and white mixed together; it’s the red of Ruby and the white of Summer.”
“Also making it pink means she matches Neo. I wasn't too worried about making sure everybody matches everything. It's obviously not Neo's shade of pink but you know, color association and whatnot.”
T-Shirt - Comfy Life:
“I also have Ruby in a T-shirt because I wanted her to look extraordinarily comfortable, because she has a comfortable life. She doesn't have the life where her mother died and she's sad, her life's pretty decent. So having it just be a normal t-shirt where her arms are a bit more exposed. I felt like it displayed the chill nature that she has. Life is more chill than Canon!Ruby.”
Brown - Match Team:
“Also, I made her vest brown to sort of match Jaune and Oscar because they also have browns in their accents but it's just an unnecessary extra element. Sometimes less is more.”
Black - Resembles OG Ruby (Goth):
“I was too afraid to steer too far away from recognizable in canon. So I did decide to keep the dark colors for her skirt, boots, and arm bracers, but I regret not pushing the limits more. I wish l had chosen to embrace using reds, whites, and pinks a lot more.”

8:43 - 8:58 - “So Ruby was the first one I designed, she’s a good starting point to RWBY. Once I got her down it was easy to figure out everyone else.”
9:14 - 9:38 - “The most notable thing with Ruby is that I didn't want her to be too different since her Reversed Fate isn't that dissimilar from normal Ruby. I wanted her to be the control, like in a science experiment? Ruby's basically the same, it's just the circumstances around her that are different.”
