Some random thoughts from re-watching Akuma no Riddle
I was in bed with a cold, I'd already been thinking about re-watching the series since I'd been re-listening to the ED songs, so I figured hey might as well. That was a couple of days ago now so, here are some thoughts (spoilers ahead, though in all fairness this is a twelve year old anime so....*shrug*).
I still enjoyed this a lot. I think my enjoyment was admittedly fuelled by nostalgia, but even so it was a solid bit of entertainment for me
With that being said, not a fan of the fanservice. I know that's pretty standard for a lot of anime, and since this is a yuri anime it's less surprising that there'd be fanservice. So to a certain extent I could just shrug it off and wait for the scene to move on but still. Very much NOT a fan of that. Also I think it was in incredibly poor taste to have Mahiru be the subject of swimsuit sabotage in the OVA considering her backstory.
Apart from this quibble, the OVA was fun, I will admit.
The ending songs are all still bangers. Even the ones that aren't really to my personal tastes (Isuke's, Sumireko's, Kouko's....kinda-sorta also Haru's and Suzu's, though I liked those two more than the other three) were pretty good. Still salty we got no Shiena song though.
I don't think I liked Isuke's character back when I first watched it, but on the re-watch I've decided that she's actually kinda an icon? Glamorous rich-kid assassin saved from neglect by two dads (whom she calls Mama and Papa?), who rocks her very masculine name? Icon. I definitely like her a lot more now. It also legit made me cackle when Isuke met Haruki, ordered her to call her 'Isuke-sama', only for Haruki to agree so casually that it's almost like the honorific lost its meaning.
My favourite character from Black Class is definitely Suzu though. I liked her a lot twelve years ago, so that's not too much of a change admittedly. But I'm struck by how much I enjoyed her character this time around too. Her assassination attempt stood out, and her general personality is interesting.
Though I'm lowkey disappointed that during her time in Black Class, there wasn't a single scene where anyone pointed out that her speech is somewhat old-fashioned. It would have been a great hint towards her backstory, which I guess her comments about feeling stiff and achy also were? But I feel CONVINCED that her style of speech was one of the clues...maybe someone made an analysis post or something that I read twelve years ago and I was remembering that? Or maybe it came up in the manga and I saw a screencap (I have not read the manga)? I dunno.
Favourite couple is still Chitaru and Hitsugi, which, to be fair, is an obvious and easy choice but come on. They were both tragic and adorable, how could I not love them? Plus, if I was ranking the ending songs, 'Poison Me' would be very high on the list. I do feel like their story would have made better sense if they'd died for real at the end of Episode 6. But, I adore them enough that I can forgive it anyway.
TBH, most of the other characters deserve their happy endings regardless of plausibility. An exception to this is Otoya Takechi. That girl needs to stay in prison, so it's a good thing she ended up there.
As much as Tokaku/Haru is meant to be the main couple, I do think the Tokaku/Haru/Nio trio dynamic is so much fun. It's like a grumpyXdouble sunshine kinda thing. Though, I feel like if Tokaku ever heard the three of them being described as that, she'd grumble that Nio was more like sunburn rather than sunshine....and then not get why everyone in the vicinity cracks up laughing at that.
In regards to the rest of Black Class in general, I liked how interesting and distinctive each of them were, even if we only saw some of them for a little while. Given it's a short anime there's not that much development for them, and presumably there'd be more in the manga, but there was enough there for each of them to interest me in different ways.
Rewatching gave me a random idea for a fanfic featuring a new Black Class and appearances from this Black Class as an adult...I probably won't be writing the actual fic (*stares at my pile of WIPs*)...but I will make picrews and short profiles of the new Black Class, and I might write up the general outline of the idea just to get it outta my head.
I love that Mash's hands/muscles are rated E for Everyone 😂
