As I prepare for the damages that Hurricane Dorian will do to my city I've been experiencing some things that have been an ongoing situation since I tried to remove myself from their grasp.

Because of how clear I needed the answers to be and how my own tools of divination have been giving me confused answers outside of readings for others, no doubt caused by the people in question. I've had to reach out to others with the fear of my life heavy on my shoulders.

How To Do Rhapsodomancy

I haven’t seen any posts on how to do this type of divination- nor is there anything on it if you do a quick google search, so I thought I’d make a post! 

So, quick definition: Rhapsodomancy is a form of divination performed by interpreting random passages, poems, books, or song lyrics. It’s really simple to do- especially if you’re very intuitive! 

There are multiple ways to do this and every witch might have their own variation on it, but here are three simple methods I use.

METHOD ONE - Books

Think of a question you’d like answered.

Grab the book nearest you. It can be anything! The Bible, Pride and Prejudice, a Percy Jackson book. I do find, however, that fiction, religion, or mythology works best. 

Close your eyes and concentrate on your question and the fact that you’d like it answered. 

Flip open the book to any random page, eyes still closed.

Slide your pointer finger over the pages you’ve landed until you feel like its right to stop. 

The sentence/paragraph you’ve stopped on is your answer. Interpret as you will or try again. 

METHOD TWO - Song Lyrics

Think of a question you’d like answered. 

Concentrate on your question.

Take out your phone/ipod/whatever, and select shuffle (yes, this is similar to shufflemancy). 

Whatever song you land on is your answer.

You can choose to stop there OR you can go one step further and search up the song lyrics online. 

Once you do that, remain concentrated on your question, closing your eyes. 

Slide your finger down the screen on the page with the song lyrics.

Stop when you feel its appropriate. 

The line you’ve stopped on is your answer. Interpret as you will or try again.

METHOD THREE - Poetry

This is very similar to method one and two! Think of a question you’d like answered. 

Pull out a book filled with poetry (or maybe pull up some online poetry site that allows you to shuffle and find random poetry).

Close your eyes.

Flip to a random page (/shuffle) while concentrating on your question.

If it’s a short poem, you can just say the whole poem is your answer (if that feels right to you).

If it’s long, or if you need a more specific answer, keep on.

Slide your finger down the page you’ve landed on, until you feel like its right to stop.

That line is your answer. Interpret as you will or try again.

You can modify these methods to apply to any type of creative written word you want! You can use crystals to intensify the divination, or do a prayer before, or whatever you think will help.

HOW RHAPSODODMANCY WORKS

Rhapsodomancy can be performed in various ways, but the core idea is to let fate or intuition guide the selection of a poetic passage. Here are some common methods:

Book Method:

A practitioner randomly selects a book of poetry, asks a question, and then opens the book to a random page. The first verse or passage that catches the eye is interpreted as an answer.

Scrolling Method:

With digital texts, a similar method involves scrolling through an online poetry collection or e-book and stopping at a random point.

Prepared Slips:

Write verses or lines of poetry on separate slips of paper, place them in a container, and draw one at random.

HOW TO USE RHAPSODOMANCY

Here are a few examples of how this divination technique can help you.

Decision-Making:

Suppose you're unsure whether to accept a job offer. You might take a book of Emily Dickinson's poetry, ask your question, and open to a random page. You land on the line, "Dwell in possibility." This might suggest that the new job holds many potential opportunities.

Emotional Guidance:

Feeling lost or overwhelmed, you decide to seek comfort through Rumi's poems. You ask for emotional guidance and select a passage: "The wound is the place where the Light enters you." This could provide solace and encouragement, indicating that your struggles are a path to greater understanding.

Creative Inspiration:

As an artist seeking inspiration, you turn to a collection of Pablo Neruda's works. After focusing on your intention, you draw a slip that reads, "I want to do with you what spring does with the cherry trees." This vivid imagery could inspire a new creative direction or project.

INTERPRETATION TIPS

Context Matters:

Consider the context of the poem and how it relates to your question. A line about nature might suggest natural cycles or growth, while one about love might point to relationships.

Intuition:

Trust your intuition in interpreting the passage. The meaning might not be immediately clear, but reflect on how it resonates with your situation.

Multiple Passages:

If one passage seems unclear, it's acceptable to draw another for additional insight.

Rhapsodomancy is a fascinating blend of literary appreciation and divination. It invites us to explore the deeper meanings within poetry and to find guidance in the beauty of words. 🌙🕯️✨Gathering spiritual indigenous and black texts for Sacred Sunday Womb Circles 😻 The original Sacred Text I did this whole Bibliomancy/Rhapsodomancy thing with was actually the book on top--The Dead Emcee Scrolls.....I knew how to recite several of Saul Williams poems by heart before a few months had passed. I don't know what happened to the original copy I had of the book. It was passed off to me by a young Chicano named Chris I went to school with who happened to catch me watching a Saul video and was already a fan. 🌹🦋 Any of my other blitches into Bibliomancy or any of the other related Divination arts? I know you all do Tarot–everyone does Tarot it seems!!!!– but I mean the art of utilizing the written word for messages? These are three of my current faves for Bibliomancy… Before I begin I will give a small definition for those who don’t know: it is the art of opening a book that holds spiritual value at random (usually) and interpreting the passage that first sticks out to you for spiritual, meditative, and divinatory purposes. ✨ Sacred Woman by Queen Afua is in a lot of ways the perfect book for this art. It is full of prayer, advice, and anecdotes. ✨Black Culture is an old textbook of my mother in Law’s. I loved her very much and miss her all the time…anyway she went through college as a single mama with two sons and in fact graduated twice! When she passed I got to go through thousands of books–mostly on cooking and black literature. I am an ok cook now thank goodness, you can eat and not die at my house anymore! But the anthologies of poetry and thought and essays are a true treasure to me. ✨Last book is the newest to my practice! When you read from poetry or prose it’s called “Rhapsodomancy”… I have long used poetry for bibliomancy–in high school I had an anthology of womens lit which I had BEGGED my adoptive mother to not return at the end of her school semester. More on that book later, right now–Salt. It’s a beautiful piece and really it is perfect for prose, meditation, and, yes, Rhapsodomancy. 🦋 I think it would be fun to start posting vids where I open from one of these books every day and maybe normalize the practice a bit. Of course the practice of Bibliomancy has been around since long before the word–indigenous folks wrote books long before Europeans did. I in fact have a collection I would love to share of spiritual books perfect for Bibliomancy. Anyone who would like to see this or am I the only one on my list still upholding this practice? Would love to know…. .

There are no bandaid solutions to overcoming your fears and anxiety and self-doubt. If you want to be better, you have to dedicate yourself to it. Be proactive. Understand that recovery is not easy, nor is there a straight path to it. But, if you work hard at it, one day you’ll see that you’re in a much better place than you are now.
