Saved Filters on AO3, cont'd

This post is part 2 of a guide with screenshots made in Chrome on an Android phone explaining one approach to applying saved filters to any AO3 works or bookmarks listing:

Setting up your filters and saving them as a browser bookmark

Turning the info regarding your filters from said bookmark into a bookmarklet that will apply them to any other works or bookmarks listing page

I've also posted a text guide with more details on AO3 (of which I was using the initially posted version while making the screenshots, so it won't match what you see in this post now; just take the code from the text of this post anyway), and a somewhat more technical guide on GitHub.

Now it's time to turn your bookmark into a bookmarklet that will work the magic!

Hold your finger over the line of code that follows (not the image above) to select it. After making sure that the entire line was selected, including the lone quotation mark " at the end, hit Copy in the menu that appears.

Once you've done that, open the meatballs menu next to your search/address bar (the one with the three dots) and select the Bookmarks option.

This'll take you to your browser's Mobile bookmarks listing, which should include the bookmark you added in part 1. At this point, it will still have the name of the page you picked at the very beginning. Open the meatballs menu through the three dots that are in the same line as your bookmark.

The menu that opens will give you the option to Edit the bookmark.

In the Edit bookmark form, we'll make use of the Name and the URL fields.

First, change the Name to something more easily recognisable as your saved filters bookmarklet, something simple like AO3 Saved Filters will do. (You may want to be more specific if you intend to create multiples of this bookmarklet to set up multiple sets of saved filters.)

In the URL field, make sure to first move your cursor to the very beginning, before the "https://..." even. Your keyboard may already offer you the option to paste the code that was copied before; if not, long-press the cursor that's still at the start of the field to summon the little menu that lets you Paste things.

Once the changes have been made like this, make sure to save the edits (Chrome does it automatically, but a different browser may have a separate Save button for this).

If you head back to your browser's Mobile bookmarks listing, you should see that the entry for this bookmarklet has changed. Close the Mobile bookmarks listing with the X in the corner.

Now it's time to select the entire big ass block of code that follows (again, not the image above). You can drag the bubbles at each end of the selected text to move them around. Make sure that the selected section starts with the lone quotation mark " and ends with the semicolon ; Find the menu that shows up with the selected text (you may need to scroll to the beginning or the end) and Copy this selection.

Open the form to edit your saved filters bookmarklet again and Paste the entire block of code at the very end of the URL field. Once these changes have been saved, you're all done with the setup portion of this. Congrats on making it!

This post is the final part of a guide to using saved filters on AO3 with screenshots made in Chrome on an Android phone:

I've also posted a detailed text guide on AO3 that isn't attached to any specific device + browser combination, and a somewhat more technical guide on GitHub.

Let's start by actually browsing on AO3. I was visiting the Batman - All Media Types works listing for this guide, but it'll work with any of this kind of page on AO3 that can be filtered on.

Initially, if you check, no filters will have been applied. Boo.

Well then, time to head to the search/address bar.

Once you're in the Search or type web address field, start typing the name of your bookmarklet. After a bit, it should list that bookmarklet as a suggestion.

When you give that bookmarklet a hit, it'll work its magic and load the same listing again, but with all of your saved filters now.

If you want to find out more about the code, I've put a version where the code was formatted in a way that makes it easier to read on GitHub, and added some comments into the code to note what each part does.
