Gotta love Tubular Bells, the 1971 album-length instrumental by Mike Oldfield. A teenaged musical genius, this was his debut album, released by a small independent record store that wanted to start a label: Virgin Records. That first release sold more than 16 million copies, so there’s no Richard Branson without the insane runaway success of Tubular Bells. Adding to its pop culture luster is the fact that the opening segment became the theme to 1973’s The Exorcist, which surely helped sell more copies over the decades.
