Patsy Cline Documentary Coming to PBS in March
In the trailer for “Patsy Cline: American Masters,” a young Willie Nelson, author of the country singer’s most-enduring song, tries unsuccessfully to put his finger on what, precisely, made Cline so special.
“There was something there that set her apart and you can’t describe it,” the “Crazy” songwriter says.
“Or I can’t.”
Coinciding with Women’s History Month and narrated by Rosanne Cash, the documentary about the singer, who died in a 1963 airplane crash at age 30, is set to premiere March 4 on PBS.
The span of Cline’s influence is apparent in the motley group of artists who take part in the film. Among them are Reba McEntire, Rhiannon Giddens, LeAnn Rimes, Thin Lizzy’s Ricky Warwick and actress Beverly D'Angelo, who played Cline in “Coal Miner’s Daughter.”
“Patsy Cline had the most profound impact on my life of anyone I never met,” she says.
Kacey Musgraves calls Cline “a tough girl singing these really sensitive songs" and supposes the juxtaposition bled into her private life as well.
“I feel like you could go out and have a drink with her, but she could also, like, beat your ass,“ Musgraves says.
“(Cline) came through it, the (1961) car wreck, the bad marriage, the poverty that she lived in and having to quit school and go to work,” McEntire says.
“All of those things made her what she was.”
In addition to these artists’ thoughts, the film features archival footing of Cline in interviews and on stage.
