Capitol Hwy Milepost 7. Just like SE Stark St, SW Capitol Hwy had mile markers to note distance to downtown. Placed sometime in the mid nineteenth century (probably), this milestone next to the Capitol Hill Library is the only known one remaining. Street Photography in NYC w/ Ricoh 35ZF

Hi World.

Happy New Year!

I've just returned from a week long trip to NYC! Whilst visiting the Big Apple I thought it would be the perfect time to try some Street Photography.

For this trip, I packed my Ricoh 35ZF. This is a Taiwanese built camera released in the late 60’s. It’s great for traveling and really puts your photography skills to the test due to its size and minimalist qualities.  The ZF in the camera’s title stands for Zone Focus. This technique relies on the user to find an appropriate aperture and estimating the distance of the subject. This seems to be the standard practice for a lot of street photographers and can be really useful when you’re not able to look through the viewfinder.

For the majority of my shots, I used an aperture around F/ 8-16  to try and get everything in focus. For my more artsy shots, I shot at a lower aperture, especially in low light. The later created some hit and miss shots, but some of them came out with some abstract effects I found really cool.

This camera has an incredibly sharp lens, especially for something I picked up for around $30! I previously used this camera on a shoot with my homie @dustyloops. He blessed me with some expired Fuji Superia 100 and Ilford XP2 Super 400 which I took with me. Take a look through the gallery and let me know what you think!
