While I'm enjoying the Riftwar Cycle (currently on Book 24 of 31), it feels like it was edited by spellcheck. The spellings of character and town names change from book to book and I notice a typo every few chapters. And the Kindle editions vary in typesetting and not all of them are properly broken up into Kindle-recognized chapters. Unusually unpolished for published work.

Magician: Apprentice & Master by Raymond E. Feist

Years ago someone, I cannot for the life of me remember who reccomend these books to me. I really enjoyed them 20 or so odd years ago even though at the time there were only like four books (I believe there is like 30 now). I didn't recall much about them and most of what I remembered wasn't very accurate, but so far they have been great. I've finished those two and have moved on to the third one. I might listen to the fourth and stop there, at least for awhile as it is the end of the series in the cycle.

Really glad they came to Audible. I'd looked and they only had French versions for a long time.

Book Review: A Darkness at Sethanon by Raymond E. Feist.

The final instalment to the Riftwar Sage is here! The magical end to a gigantic adventure. Fear not, if you’re afraid of reading this last book because you don’t want the story to be over – this series is just the beginning. Two words – Riftwar Cycle, a collection of series written by Raymond E. Feist and several other authors about the worlds of Midkemia or Kelewan or about our now familiar cast of characters.

Quick warning to those who have yet to read the previous books – Magician: Apprentice; Magician: Master; and Silverthorn. There may be spoilers to those books in this review though not to this book in particular so, you’ve been warned.

Synopsis: This follows Prince Arutha and his band in their final battle with a dark and mysterious evil force. It also brings back the OG squad – Pug and Tomas. The pair of best friends gather for the adventure they should’ve had in the first book – to discover more about Mr. Bad, and how to destroy him before he destroys Midkemia.

In this finale, the whole cast appears to come together. We have our travelling band with targets on their back, led by Arutha. As the consequences of this expedition are direr than the previous the gang isn’t as gung-ho as they were in Silverthorn.

Pug and Tomas are both all powerful men. Pug being a master magician and head of an academy teaching young magicians. Tomas being the king of the elven world and no longer under the control of Ashen-Shugar. They’re not the young boys that’d grown up in the kitchens and were split in Mac Mordain Cadal. They have wives and children, and powers.

This makes for a nostalgia ridden book. As a reader, I found myself upset at how different the boys had grown as men and how they no longer really fit. But actually, I was probably just salty that my babies had grown up.

This, like most books that end series, was a shit-storm of action, movement and characters. You’ve got the original crew and the crew from the second book mixing and mingling their narratives. You’ve got magic and sci fi clashing at the end, intertwined with medieval battles between non-magic folk and monsters.

The end of this book was my favourite part in the entire series. The twist offers something I, personally haven’t read before. And I appreciated the uniqueness and the finesse amount of detail put into the descriptions of the ending. I’m one of those readers who truly loves a good exploration of either worlds or magic. I like to be in the know, and this book fantastically obliged.

A great wrap up to a great series. And a wonderfully enticing start to the Riftwar Cycle.
