I noticed a severe lack of my favorite Arc V kids and Arc V rep in general here so I'm gonna go for the double decker and ask for Yugo and Rin OvO
Yugo:
Why I like them/why I don’t
YUGO MY FRIEND MY BUDDY THEY CAN NEVER MAKE ME HATE YOU. Sometimes God just makes you fall for a silly little guy, a funny little man, an absolute wifeguy. Get a guy so fiercely dedicated to you that he travels across dimensions on a rampage to get you back, with no limitations to how far he'll go. That's true love, that's the good shit right there.
It helps that when he's not actively locked in and being a menace with his Speedroids, he's just a very fun guy. Super charming, very easy to hang out with, just a chill dude! We should all try to be more like Yugo!
What I like about their appearance
I like the usage of blue and red to make his white jumpsuit pop, and how it helps make his hair stand out. Silly hair. I like the hair.
The bike also is very cool!
Do I prefer their dub names or original names?
Same in both languages, I don't respect the spellings in Pendulum Beat.
Vocally, I have to give it to the Japanese. Michael Liscio is very fun as Yugo, but Shinpei Takagi just brings the heat better when Yugo locks in and is pissed off, while still being able to have fun as the character.
Japanese also gets the YUGOO JA NE, YUGO DA bit, which I fully respect 4Kids for managing to localize as much as they did.
OTP
It's Apple! Of course it's Apple! They're adorable together.
NOTP
I don't hate it. But I don't really get the hype for Yugo/Yuri even with the whole "Yugo is inside me" thing. Yuri has like three other characters where he gets much more toxic yaoi that's also just more fun.
OT3
That said, Yugo/Rin/Yuri where they force him to socialize and domesticate him like a feral alley cat is kinda funny. I support that specific take on Yugo/Yuri where Rin's in the back with a spray bottle.
(also shout out to that one fanart of Yugo/Rin/Yuri where Rin and Yuri are Dark Signers tempting Yugo, good shit)
Favourite card they use
I love so many of Yugo's cards, I've built Speedroid in like four different formats and I always have a blast with it. Crystal Wing probably takes it though, just such a gorgeous design and powerful effect! Terrortop is also my buddy!
Favourite moment they were in
In general, that Yugo is just so dedicated to Rin that he goes on a rampage to save her is peak, but that because he's not the main character, it's basically a side-quest for the story that barely intersects is so funny. Yugo legit never learns about Zarc until Yuri absorbs him and that's so funny.
Otherwise, I'm really fond of his duel with Serena and that his silly antics manage to let Serena have probably the first fun duel of her life.
Least favourite moment
I feel like "The entire ending" is cheating, but...
No for real, fuck the ending. You know even they thought it sucked when half of the Arc-V Duel Links events have been undoing it to give the Lancers a better ending. Yugo and the other fragments deserved better than being stuck in two soul jars for the rest of their lives! Yugo especially deserved a happy ending after everything he and Rin went through in his rescue mission!
Rin:
Why I like them/why I don’t
So the Rin in my head (as opposed to the Rin in Yuzu's head) is really cool... And that's all I got, Rin got nothing in canon beyond that she looks cool, has a neat deck and a fun dynamic with Yugo
Fortunately Duel Links affirmed that I'm right and she is really cool, and a bit of a shit. I like it when the Yugioh Girls are allowed to be a bit of a jerk sometimes. It's equality~
But yeah, I said with Kotori that I call "Liking a Yugioh character more for the version of them in my head over the canon take" as "The RinRin Effect," for a reason. Rin has basically no screentime so it's all vibes as to her character, but the vibes have told me she's fun.
What I like about their appearance
She does look really cool though. That shade of green in her hair is so good and I am very fond of her overall outfit.
And that it has the trans flag! You can't go wrong with blue-pink-white as a palette.
Do I prefer their dub names or original names?
Same in both languages.
Vocally, I'm a bit torn. I think I overall like Sarah Emi Bridcutt's take the best, followed by Samantha Cooper's slightly more raspy/husky dub performance in Duel Links. Emily Jenness's Rin in the original dub never really landed for me, but to be fair Emily had maybe two episodes to try and give Rin a unique voice so I can't hold it against it too hard that her Rin wasn't as memorable.
OTP
I'm gonna be boring and just say "I don't like separating Yugo and RinRin," but I read a fanfic once where she dates Reiji and... yeah I kinda like it in a vaccum!
I've also seen this one person who ships her with Rio and that works!
NOTP
I know for a godforsaken fact that there's too much fanart of the Bracelet Girls and the Doktor. I don't like it. I wish he suffered more.
OT3
I've seen some fanart of Masumi being in a poly relationship with all of the Bracelet Girls at once that's pretty cool. Otherwise I guess I like the idea of the Bracelet Girls themselves staying close post-ending and it's readable in a lot of different ways.
Favourite card they use
I like that Duel Links has Rin casually note that Clear Wing likes her more than Yugo. That's just kinda mean but so funny.
Otherwise, Winter Bell.
Favourite moment they were in
Brainwashed as she was, Rin was kinda serving during her duel with Yugo and I have to respect the commitment to the bit of riding Winter Bell. Her and Yugo's duel happening as they fly back down the tower is pretty sick.
Honorable mention to her Duel Links conversation with Dennis where she bluntly says she refuses to let Yuri have a W on her so she's getting her rematch. Queen shit.
Least favourite moment
Do I need to say it? Of course it's everything involving the Fusion Parasite. I hate that stupid fetish-dream bug and what it does to the writing of Arc-V and how it ruins all four of the Bracelet Girls. There is one time I've praised its existence and that was some cool body horror fanart I saw one time.
Dishonorable mention to the entire ending because, no, seriously, for real, what the hell was that? It's been eleven years and I'm still pissed!
god I love these two little brats. I hope they're happy right now.

Yugo’s Duel Links line do not confirm much, but they confirm Rin as a future unlockable character.
So, let’s do Rin’s Windwitches.
The Windwitches use the Katakana ウィンド・ウィッチ-, and the short form WW-. This name pattern is the same as Speedroids, as well as Raidraptors, and Lyrilusc. In Rin’s case, these reference to Blackwings, and by proxy Battlewasps.
The repeating ウィ ウィ sound means “oui oui”, ie. “yes, yes” in French. This is because Rin’s name is based off Sherry’s name, and Yugo’s official romanization, Hugo, is based off the French pronounciation. So yes. She’s (fake) French.
The names use the ウ, u, Katakana, because if they used the “vi” sound, it would be interchangable with “bi” in Japanese. So Windwitch would be Bindb*tch.
The archetype’s naming pattern is WW - [Something] Bell. The Bell part likely alludes to Flower Witch Mary Bell, an old magical girl parody that later became a classic magical girl show. The archetype itself is mixture of Ojamajo Doremi, Kiki’s Delivery Service, and Puella Magi Madoka Magica. It is also based off old DM era card, Ceremonial Bell, a LIGHT Spellcaster.
The short form, WW, alludes to ww, Japanese form of “lol”.
****
**Windwitch - Ice Bell uses ウィンド・ウィッチ-アイス・ベル/WW-アイス・ベル. While アイス, Aisu, sounds similar to eyes, it is almost always used to mean Ice in Yu-Gi-Oh!.
**Windwitch - Snow Bell uses ウィンド・ウィッチ-スノウ・ベル/WW-スノウ・ベル. スノウ, Snou, is also used in Snoww, Unlight of Dark World. The traditional Katakana for Snow in Yu-Gi-Oh! is スノー, Snoo.
Note: Though it looks a transformation trinket, it is actually a monster, same as the humanoid Windwitches. This likely an allusion to PMMM, as this is a more literal interpretation of how Soul Gems work.
**Windwitch - Winter Bell uses ウィンド・ウィッチ-ウィンター・ベル/WW-ウィンター・ベル. As seen here, ウィンター, Uintaa, uses the ウィン, Uin sound in ウィンド, Uindo, wind.
Note: This card’s design alludes to Goddess Nike, which is repeating motif in its future incarnations. This Nike motif is also used for Clear Wing variants, as Yugo’s Deck is gambling based.
The actual reason for the Nike motif is likely Converving Wishes, and its’ artwork’s monster, Stardust Trail, who is literally Aki dressed up as Stardust Dragon. This monster poses as Nike in both artworks.
Its Battle Phase Special Summon is likely a homage to 5D’s animé Traps’ effects.
**Windwitch - Crystal Bell uses ウィンド・ウィッチ-クリスタル・ベル/WW-クリスタル・ベル. クリスタル, Kuristaru, is the standard Katakana used for Crystal based monsters (Crystal Beasts use Kanji hogyoku, yes, the same as from Bleach, instead.)
Note This card’s name alludes to Crystal Wing Synchro Dragon.
Its effect copying effect is based off Yubel’s Phantom of Chaos, but this one likely alludes to Starving Venom Fusion Dragon, whose effect copying effect is also based off Phantom of Chaos.
**Windwitch - Glass Bell uses ウィンド・ウィッチ-グラス・ベル/WW-グラス・ベル. グラス, Grasu, is used both as glass, and grass, though these days it is mostly used as Grass.
Note: This card is based off Rin herself, since “Ri” kanji in Ruri’s name can mean glassy.
**Windwitch - Blizzard Bell uses ウィンド・ウィッチ-ブリザード・ベル/WW-ブリザード・ベル. ブリザード, Burizaado, is the standard Katakana for Blizzard in Yu-Gi-Oh!.
**Windwitch - Freeze Bell uses ウィンド・ウィッチ-フリーズ・ベル/WW-フリーズ・ベル. The フリーズ, Furizu Katakana is the standard Katakana for Freeze in Yu-Gi-Oh!.
**Windwitch - Diamond Bell uses ウィンド・ウィッチ-ダイヤモンド・ベル/WW-ダイヤモンド・ベル. ダイヤモンド, Daiyamondo is the standard Katakana for Diamond in Yu-Gi-Oh!.
Note: Though this is the uncorrupted form of Crystal Bell, it is meant to be the Synchro form of Blizzard Bell, specifically, due to repeating “do”, ド sound.
Its name alludes to diamond dust, but also has the “dai” (great) sound in it.
**Windwitch Chimes uses ウィンド・ウィッチのすずおと/WWの鈴音, Uindouitchu no Suzuoto. 鈴, suzu, Kanji means bell, and can be written as rin. 音, oto, means sound, and is one of the recurring Kanji for Melodious. So it means Windwitch Bell Sounds, but it alludes to both Rin, and Yuzu.
Note: This card’s name, and artwork is based off the Call of the Windwitch, an unprinted Windwitch card from the animé. Its artwork references the night flight part from the Kiki’s Delivery Service.
**Ice Breeze Refrain uses ひょうふうのリフレイン/氷風のリフレイン, Hyoufuu no Rifurein. 氷, Hyou, means ice, and can be read as kouri. 風, fuu, means wind. Both these Kanji allude to Rin, first one allude to Kahyoreigetsu, and the second one alludes to Kachofugetsu. リフレイン, Rifurein sounds like refrigate, and has the fu (wind) sound.
Refrain itself means:
A refrain (from Vulgar Latin refringere, "to repeat", and later from Old French refraindre) is the line or lines that are repeated in music or in poetry — the "chorus" of a song. Poetic fixed forms that feature refrains include the villanelle, the virelay, and the sestina.
In popular music, the refrain or chorus may contrast with the verse melodically, rhythmically, and harmonically; it may assume a higher level of dynamics and activity, often with added instrumentation. Chorus form, or strophic form, is a sectional and/or additive way of structuring a piece of music based on the repetition of one formal section or block played repeatedly.
This ties in to the repeating music puns going around with Bracelet Girls, and their Decks. The fact that the term comes from French also ties into Rin’s faux French aesthetic.
***
General design notes:
**Though the burn effects, and the overall “Witch” theming of the archetype is based off Aki’s earlier Deck, the archetype itself more closely resembles Sherry’s Deck, who actually has a WIND Synchro Monster, Chevalier de Fleur. This is likely because Sherry’s Deck more closely mirrors Yusei’s, whereas Rin’s Deck is designed work with Clear Wing, and Speedroid Synchros.
**Spellcaster Typing seems to be more for Majespecters, who are the other WIND Spellcaster archetype introduced in ARC-V era, and who the OCG variants of Windwitches are designed work with. They are a Xyz archetype, however (Majester Paladin, the Ascending Dracoslayer).
**Crystal Bell, and Diamond Bell have the same jetstreams as Clear Wing variants. I think one of them specifically allude the one of the variants, but I lost the Japanese comment pointing that out.
***It is unclear if this because of Bracelet Girls being also manifestations of the Dragons, or something going on with Clear Wİng, whose Magician form, White Wing Magician, is a Yuzu/Ray/Bracelet Girl clone like rest of the female Pendulum Magicians.
***The tentative explanation is likely because of how Stardust Dragon, and Black Rose Dragon are generally paired together, Clear Wing, and Winter Bell variants are constantly paired together. Of course, since Clear Wing is female, this means she’s into girls.
**The way the Extra Deck monsters are designed are also likely a homage to how Witches in PMMM work.
**While Little Witch Academia re-popularized cute witches in Japan, for a long while, magical girls besides Ojamajo Doremi were designed to be completely distinct from witches (I wonder if the Western Satanic panic had something to do with it, it is why Wendy the Good Little Witch basically disappeared the face of the earth for a good while). Thanks for PMMM correcting that mistake.
**The ice goggles humanoid Windwitches wear likely allude to Gremlins from Looney Tunes, specifically.
***As the gremlins in Looney Tunes are airplane saboteurs, the archetype itself might be a homage to WW2 Night Witches, USSR’s 588th Night Bomber Aviation Regiment This ties to Shun’s, and Yuto’s WW2 era references.
**As discussed before, the Christmas theming of the archetype likely alludes to Christmas being a romantic holiday in Japan.
Edit: Corrected Diamond’s Katakana spelling to Daiyamondo, from Daimundo, as well as a few spelling errors. Also Freeze Bell also has the “fuu” (wind) sound (Furiizu). Riizu is also a combination of Rin+Suzu, so it sounds like Wind Bell Bell.
