Voltron’s “Deal with the Devil” Isn’t with Lotor, It’s with Zarkon

The more I watch the season 5 trailer, the more convinced I am that the trailer is attempting to mislead us a bit and play it up like Team Voltron is going to have to make some horrific deal with the devil with Lotor.

However, based on what I’m actually seeing in the trailer, I’m thinking it might be a completely different scenario: Team Voltron is attempting to cut some kind of deal with Zarkon, and Lotor is trying to stop them.

@quidarts mentioned this in their recent post: We never see Lotor when Pidge says “Every word is a lie!” We assume she’s talking about Lotor only because this clip comes a second after he was on the screen, but there’s no actual context clues in that moment to determine whether she’s talking to Lotor, about Lotor, about the Galra in general, or even about something else entirely.

Even if she is saying this to Lotor, it might still be in the same scene where Lotor shouts at them not to play into Zarkon’s hands--perhaps Pidge has some emotional stake in the outcome of their “deal with the devil” that is predisposing her not to buy into Lotor’s words...?

If the Team has Lotor trapped in a cyropod, as it appears, then this scene with Lance and Allura, which takes place on the bridge, isn’t the same exact one in which Lotor is yelling at them to not play into Zarkon’s schemes. Furthermore, it’s unlikely that the target of Lance’s ire/discomfort is in the room with them--I think we can all agree that if he was saying this about Lotor while Lotor was in the room, he’d be saying it directly to Lotor’s face, no holds barred.

So this moment is either occurring before the team traps Lotor, i.e. very early in the new season (possibly before they let him on board at all), or, the possibility I’m much more interested in: it’s occurring independently of Lotor, and the “deal with the devil” that Lance is uncomfortable with isn’t with Lotor at all--it’s with Zarkon.

There’s more evidence for this possibility in the rest of the trailer:

Since Dreamworks has not properly subtitled the trailer (ouch, that lack of ADA compliance hurts my soul), it’s still unclear exactly what Zarkon is saying at 0:40 seconds into the trailer, but the more I listen to it, the more convinced I am that Zarkon is definitely saying “They’re making a one-time offer.” You can see Ezor in the background. If the voice-over matches the image here (and that’s a big “if,” especially since we can’t exactly see Zarkon’s mouth moving anymore), then Zarkon is describing an offer being made to him--not an offer that he is making to someone else.

Then we get Lotor’s “Don’t play into Zarkon’s hands!” line, followed by these two cuts which, when placed together, appear to form a showdown between Matt-Shiro-Pidge and Zarkon-plus-Generals.

This is likely to lead into the scene of Matt, Shiro, and Pidge fighting (against or maybe with, who knows?) Ezor, which was leaked sooo long ago. In fact, it appears that the team might actually be on a Galra battlecruiser in the leaked photo...

Finally, it appears that at least one of Lotor’s fight scenes is taking place inside something Galra-affiliated, due to the very dark color scheme:

While the other (or perhaps a continuation?) takes place outside, in a place that has a remarkably similar color scheme to the place where Shiro, Matt, and Pidge are facing down Zarkon (complete with fuzzy floating black dust specks):

Soooo, take-aways from the trailer:

1) Shiro is going to go with both Holts, with Matt featuring prominently in the lead of that shot, to meet Zarkon face-to-face and probably attempt some sort of deal.

2) The fact that both of the Holt siblings are there and Matt is in the foreground suggests to me that whatever is going on has something to do with the Holts, maybe personally.

3) What does Zarkon have over them that would be strong enough to convince them to face him head-to-head? There’s only a couple of scenarios: he’s got hostage(s), he’s got his finger on a nuke-an-entire-planet-button, or he’s taken something vital and the team really, really needs it back.

4) What does Team Voltron have that Zarkon wants? They didn’t bring a lion to that scene, at least not visibly, so it’s obvious they’re not offering that. They might have part of the comet from Lotor’s ship, but it’s unlikely they would offer to trade something so dangerous. Which leaves them with nothing to really hold as leverage in a deal with Zarkon, except...

One trapped boy.

tl;dr Season 5 Prediction: I’m not sayin’ Team Voltron is going to sell out Lotor to Zarkon in exchange for something they want--a safety, a ceasefire, or maybe SAMUEL FREAKIN’ HOLT??!?--but lol Lotor came to bargain and is probably going to end up as the bargaining chip.
