Response under the cut because it’s long. It’s so long that I’m a little sorry. But not really.
To understand why K-MUCH’s lack of success is not Honggyu’s fault, the first thing you have to understand is that he hasn’t always been the group’s leader. When K-MUCH initially debuted in 2014, they followed Crayon Pop’s example and decided not to have a formal leader at all. It wasn’t until months after they’d begun promoting that a casual mention was made (on Twitter, if I remember correctly) that Honggyu had been made the official leader of the group (and you’re right, he absolutely is a great one).
As for the backstory, you have to know a little bit about Chrome Ent’s and K-MUCH’s history. The company was founded and run by CEO Hwang who had no knowledge of the entertainment industry at all (and didn’t/doesn’t even listen to pop music, he prefers classical). He happened to see a performance by T-ARA and was inspired to debut his own girl group; thus Crayon Pop was born.
Unfortunately, due to his lack of knowledge, Crayon Pop’s first year was a complete failure and they resorted to promoting themselves through guerrilla performances on the streets of Seoul as well as cultivating a close relationship with their fans and the regular uploading of their Crayon Pop TV series. As everyone knows, Crayon Pop eventually hit it big with their Bar Bar Bar in June 2013 and as a result they saved Chrome Entertainment from going bankrupt and shutting down.
Flash forward to the end of 2013, K-MUCH had already been announced to the media and were promoting themselves by performing cover dances at various middle schools around the country. Let me re-state that: barely 6 months after being on the brink of bankruptcy, CEO Hwang announced his intention to debut another idol group and have them promote regularly.
Anyways, they formally debuted with a different version of Crayon Pop’s Bar Bar Bar with a name that translates to “Northern Snakehead Fish” and, thanks to all the attention from being Crayon Pop’s little brother group, did relatively well for themselves. They had regular appearances on the music shows, over 3,000 cafe members in the first 3 months, their entire debut mini album entered the Top 100 on MelOn, and they regularly appeared in the top 10 live search rankings.
They promoted their debut mini album for 3 to 4 months (so January until April/Mayish, there was never a formal end) and began preparing for their followup that summer featuring self-compositions (it was around this time that Honggyu was made the leader). Suddenly out of nowhere however, CEO Hwang announced that Chrome would be debuting another new group, Bob Girls. And then less than a week later...Chrome debuted another group, Zan Zan.
Again, let me re-state. Between June 2013 and June 2014, Chrome went from being days away from financial disaster to having debuted not one new group but three.
It was during this time that CEO Hwang sent K-MUCH to Japan to hold somewhat regular concert series during which they performed the only 3 songs they’d released + 1 unreleased self-composition. With the comeback being pushed back twice (once in July, again in August), Loki eventually stopped promotions with the group and officially withdrew in September. At this point, they had effectively disappeared from the Korean pop scene and their cafe membership dwindled.
Between February and March 2015 K-MUCH suddenly released 2 new songs as pre-releases to their first full album. Both of these songs were a huge departure from their established sound and were not promoted at all. The full album, however, never surfaced and K-MUCH was once again sent to Japan to hold their concert series. By this time Bob Girls had disbanded, Zan Zan weren’t actively promoting, and Crayon Pop had just comeback with FM.
K-MUCH spent the rest of 2015 resuming their hiatus until they eventually had their first comeback with Tie My Hands, 1 year and 10 months after debuting. This song was more in line with their pre-release sounds but still very different from the dance music they’d debuted with. The company put some effort into promotions, but eventually they ended things after about a month and a half. Once again, K-MUCH was on hiatus.
I’ll end the lesson here because that brings us to 2016 which was a big year for Chrome (during which their hiatus continued but it was less because of their company and more because of happenstance). If you read all of that, what I hope you understand is that K-MUCH were literally never given a chance to succeed by their former CEO. They started off strong and were considered a hot debut for the 2014 year, but bad decision after bad decision made by their company as well as what I personally feel is a degree of sabotage ensured that they would never succeed. Honggyu as the leader expressed his frustration with his former CEO on multiple occasions and always made sure to know what the group was up to in regards to releasing music, but the company just never followed through on any of their plans and the fans were constantly left hanging.
I’m getting emotional and I could literally talk about this subject for days so I’ll move on to your other questions now hahaha.
Yeongkyun technically does have an official position as being a sub-vocal, but the reason I said he doesn’t is because from the time of debut he has always been the member to bounce around the most. For one song he will be a sub-vocal while for another he’ll be a rapper and at the same time he is one of the 2 dancers in the group but he is never given an opportunity to showcase his talents (outside of his personal Instagram). He’s even mentioned it previously that he doesn’t seem to have a set position within the group because, while he is a talented vocalist, rapper, and dancer, the other members are more skilled than he and thus are the mains/leads.
MiLLY is indeed a ball of sunshine and one of the things I appreciate the most about him is how hard he works to improve himself. When he first debuted he mentioned that he didn’t think he was a good rapper and that he actually liked singing more (but he just wasn’t suited for it professionally) and now, 3 years later he’s practiced and improved his voice so much that he sings entire verses in the Magical Realism album in addition to his rap verses.
Ato is originally from Changwon, Gyeongsangnam-do. He lived there until he was 19, so basically about 6 months before he debuted with K-MUCH. He also has a lisp which means translating him while subbing videos is..interesting...
Lastly, BomB is so easy to love it’s almost ridiculous. As I said in my initial comment he’s still so new that we don’t know nearly as much about him as we do the other members (of course, we have 3 years on them vs. a few months with BomB) but from what I’ve seen in both the Korean fandom and the international one everyone has embraced him completely. The members already love him so much and adding him into the group seems to have given them a whole new burst of energy that they haven’t had for years.
