RIP HUNTER WEEK 2021
Day 5: Time Changes, People Don't
Someone needs to be responsible for protecting the timeline. Who better than a former Time Master? And any of you who'd like to join me.
So day 3 of RipWeek is “I’ve seen darker days”.
This topic makes me think of season one and what I truly did love about it.
I’m not going to claim season one was perfect. In my opinion, it took a little too long to find its groove, and while there were a few great episodes in the front part of the season (particularly blood ties, dealing with Sara’s blood lust and her continuing fight to control it), I didn’t feel like it truly gelled until after Marooned shook things up a little.
But I think overall, there was a pretty powerful theme of grief, acceptance and moving on. Rip was the most obvious example, but I think it was true for most of the characters to some extent.
Sara, for example, was grieving over her lost innocence. It didn’t consume her the way that Rip’s grief was consuming him, of course. But it was something she dealt with every day: when she found herself compelled to violence, when she succumbed to the effects of the 1950s and rejoined the League. When she found herself drawn to the nurse Lindsay and her responses to that. It wasn’t overt, but over the course of the season, we saw Sara come to terms with her past and find strength and purpose aboard the Waverider.
Kendra was grieving her normal life. People mocked her barista line, but that’s because people lack fucking empathy. The poor girl had an ordinary, happy life before she was suddenly swept up into this crazy nightmare of loved ones she can’t remember, an abuser obsessed through lifetimes....
Not all the characters were so strongly tied to their losses, but they were at least touched upon: Ray’s fiancee, Jax’s dad. Leonard Snart tried to save his childhood through keeping his father from prison.
Even Mick found himself grieving the man Snart was, or at least he’d thought he was, before they’d joined the team, while Last Refuge showed us that some hurts run deeper than that.
But each character had their own arc that moved them past that.
And of course, Rip’s arc was center stage. And as cheesy and ridiculous as season one could be, I’ll never forget Rip flying the Waverunner into the sun and then, finally, choosing life instead.
(Later season Legends has committed many sins, but I will never forgive the showrunners for having Rip take back that choice.)
I guess it’s funny. The theme is darker days, but I’m talking about how Legends was better then. But I think it was.
Season 1 Legends wasn’t afraid to be dark, and it wasn’t afraid to be painful. And yes, it could be very funny, but that wasn’t the point. The humor in season 1 came from the characters. And sometimes it came from pain or callousness, or anger. The characters weren’t always likable and they weren’t always fun, but they grew and became stronger and better.
I’m not going to say that later seasons Legends can’t be dark, I know that Zari and John Constantine in particular have had plots that address grief and guilt. But I feel like the show isn’t willing to commit the way it used to. At least not without some kind of wacky subplot to lighten the mood. And there’s nothing wrong with that, I suppose. But I liked it better the way it was.
Rip Hunter Appreciation Week - Day 3 - “I’ve seen darker days.”
There is a day that will come and he knows when it is and how it will happen there is little to be done to stop it or slow it's ever approaching yet so very distant moment. A moment every child knows in their heart, when the one whom he has left to call home, the one who made the best mince pies, and taught him to be who he is the real him underneath that mask for the world will not be there for him. Luckily she will also still be there in the past where he can find her should the need ever arise, but it haunts him...
Alone
Summary: He hoped Gideon had been listening when the signal went out, as brief as it had been, and it reached her otherwise he would probably die here. But as the last of the Time Masters, maybe it was time. Author’s Note: Day 3: “I’ve seen darker days.” – Terrible things have happened to Rip throughout the show, but as fans we’re good at thinking up more. It’s Whump Day! ********************************************* Rip Hunter, former Time Master, former Time Bureau Director, former Captain, former husband, former father, and current recluse walked slowly through the deserted space station looking for the point of origin of the distress signal he was tracking.
The station had been shut down for years and, from what he knew, there should be nothing working at all. Never mind a signal made by technology over a hundred years ahead of when the station existed.
He checked the tracker on his modified courier for the information Gideon had provided for him. Rip shook away his sadness at the fact they weren’t together, but current circumstances meant they weren’t able to be.
Reaching the coordinates, Rip frowned when he saw the object and realising that what he’d been tracking was a trap set by Time Pirates. Turning he began to run through the corridors back to the Time Sphere, hearing the device charging. Reaching the Sphere, Rip jumped in and activated a time jump but before the portal closed the Sphere was rocked by an energy wave. Rip grimaced as he fought to steady the small craft, but the blast had disabled several of the systems.
“Come on,” he muttered as he tried to keep the small vessel inside the time stream long enough to reach his current base of operations, but the sphere didn’t have the same redundancies the Waverider did. Suddenly the time stream disappeared, and Rip saw the ground rushing towards him. Slamming the button to activate the emergency beacon, Rip managed to grab the disaster kit and activated the sphere’s version of an airbag before he hit the ground. Aware of things smashing around him, Rip’s head slammed against the console before everything went black.
A Reunion of Rebels (From Two Worlds)
Happy Rip Week! Jumping in with a little Timeship while paying tribute to @incendiaglacies‘s Other Legends verse because it’s so amazing.
AO3
Rip wasn’t quite sure what he expected when the time drive went off. Half of him hoped for a quick painless death. The other half of him prepared for agonizing pain of being ripped apart, a punishment of sorts. All he knew that was that letting it go meant that he was going to die, and the Legends would have some time to regroup defeat Mallus once and for all. He was just delaying the final battle.
Had Leonard Snart felt this way too when his hand was pressed to the Oculus failsafe?
The drive went off and there was nothing at first. Just a bright blinding light and heat that made him close his eyes and wait for whatever came next. There was nothing for a few brief moments. Rip wanted to reopen his eyes, but he wasn’t sure if that would be a good idea. He could still feel the heat and light on his face.
Then it happened, like a tide pulling back water from a beach. It was sudden and unexpected and terrifying. His eyes were closed as he felt himself being yanked backwards, expecting to be pulled into water or something else. It never stopped or led to anywhere. Rip didn’t know if he was being dragged across something or being pulled down towards another. He screamed as it went on and on, just hoping for a respite.
Rip Hunter Appreciation Week Day 7 - Part 17
Part 1 Part 2 Part 3 Part 4 Part 5 Part 6 Part 7 Part 8 Part 9 Part 10 Part 11 Part 12 Part 13 Part 14 Part 15 Part 16
For Rip Week, I have one last fanfic but it looks like it’s going to run late because my pacing for writing it is running a little slow. It’s for the Infinite Earths prompt, though it’s more alternate timeline than a 100% alternate Earth.
At the start of season 2, Rip winds up time shifted to Central City where he’s found by Hartley Rathaway. But Rip’s brain is a little scrambled at he doesn’t remember who he is, much less that the rest of the Legends may very well still be in peril...
The person on the ground is a man. Long brown coat, honestly looks like a Malcolm Reynolds cosplayer. Whoever he is, he's out cold. Thankfully he still has a pulse and is breathing; Hartley can hear both even before he kneels down beside him.
It's raining men! Hallelujah! plays in the distance and Hartley can't help but snort softly in amusement. Sometimes the universe really does have a sense of humor.
I’ve also got a holdover from Iris Week I’m still working on, but I really feel like I should rewatch some episodes with Eddie in them before I get too much further into this one. It’s a Detective!Iris story with Eddie as a barista at Jitters and Barry seemingly oblivious to Iris’ feelings for him - it’s an endgame Westhallen story and might wind up being two or three chapters long and I really want to do them all justice, so it’s definitely season one re-watching time.
And Iris might just be a teeny tiny little bit in love with him. Not that Barry had noticed.
Now there was Eddie. Cute, hot, flirty Eddie, whom Barry apparently had a massive crush on and wanted Iris' approval or blessing or whatever. And of course Barry had brought up the subject of Eddie right as Iris had finally worked up the courage to ask him out on a date. All that time and effort... and she deflated like a punctured balloon.
I’m idly working on a few other things too. The next chapter for Road Trip is percolating in my brain and probably what I’ll work on next this evening. Hartmon Bingo is still ongoing (how much longer is that running again?) so i should get back to that if I want to get another bingo. And Olivarry bingo has started so I should start poking at my prompts, ‘cause I got some interesting ones and it’s a new ship for me to try out. (I know it’s popular, but I’ve never written Oliver/Barry before... so new for a given usage of new.)
I haven’t done a WIP post for a while, at least partly because I think the horrible characterisation in S3 of Legends killed my muse dead. But she seems to be springing back to life a bit now, so hopefully I will get some things finished off and post some news stuff soon.
At the moment I have:
The Good, the Bad and the Unkillable - this is going to be a series of shortish fics to fix the finale of S3. Okay, we all knew he wasn’t dead, but this is how he’s not dead. It will definitely be at least three stories, the first of which is now up.
Stories for Rip Hunter Appreciation Week -
The Green Eye of the Yellow God - John Constantine meets Rip Hunter for the first time, because Rip has managed to get himself cursed. Half-written, so it will definitely be done in time.
Turn About is Fair Play - Turncoat AU that I’ve been working on forever, so I’m going to finish it finally and get it posted.
Un-named prison fic - How did Rip escape from prison? Well, here you go, this is how.
Un-named truth serum fic - This may or may not be done in time for Rip Week. Rip keeps lying to the team so they decide there’s only one way to get him to tell the truth.
Long multi-chapter fics -
The Lost Centurion - My Roman Briton AU. I’ve got a new chapter in the works for this. Hopefully it’ll be up in a couple of weeks, with some more revelations about Lacerius’ past and another appearance by King Meinitrekki (that’s Booster Gold for us non-Brittonic speakers).
Peace and Space - I haven’t forgotten about this one either, but the TimeCanary muse got up and left thanks to S3 and what they did to Sara. I’m going to do my best to finish it, but it’s proving to be very hard going.
