KT June Evals - I Am the Best

“I am the best”. 

Not a sentence that confidence-deficient Kim Taeyeon would choose to say about herself, but it being the song that they were assigned from covering a sunbae from TRC, she really didn’t have a choice.  She respected Global Icon and what they had done for the industry, but she had never been a huge fan, it just wasn’t her style.  She’d occasionally listen to their music, but normally more of their slower songs, those were more her speed. 

Standing backstage with torn black jeans and a black leather jacket, her makeup done differently to give her a more intense look, Taeyeon was surprised just how much she looked the part.  She had had to wear much more embarrassing outfits on stage before, this was more casual but tough.  As tough as the diminutive singer could look anyway.

She had worked hard over the last couple weeks to try and get herself into the feel of the song, though she honestly felt that she couldn’t have done it without Hyeri’s help.  Her friend had been instrumental in helping her learn to be more confident on the stage for this song that was so unlike something she would normally pick for herself to perform.  That being said, she was thankful for the entire group.  Soyeon and Yeri, she had known them for a while now but hadn’t really gotten an opportunity to perform much with them other than in practices, but she knew they were talented.  It was nice to see that talent put to good use on the stage.  The newest member of their KT family, Mimi, she brought a wide range of talents that Taeyeon was happy to see added to KT’s skillset.  She had high hopes for the KT girls as they continued on to their hopeful debut in the future.

Maybe she wasn’t the best, but she felt KT was at the very least.

          any regrets? none, save for these leather leggings that cling a little too intimately to hyeri’s thighs. sweating beneath stage lights is unavoidable, but paired up with skin-tight material that traps the beads in uncomfortable places-- there’s no lie to the phrase “fashion kills.” the dancer checks her reflection in the mirror again, pouting glossed lips and running slim fingers through her newly-dyed black hair. truth be told, she looks damn good.

          if only he could see it.

          bitterness rises like bile in the back of her throat and hyeri violently shakes her head to clear her thoughts. “you’re done with that, lee hyeri,” the dancer whispers and she stares straight into the glass. the young woman that looks back at her has lined-eyes full of steely determination and that is who she is now-- a product of sleepless rehearsal nights and ambition to rock this. a future idol in the making.

          “aye, let’s do it.”

          she meets the others backstage and touches hands with all. the girls in her group look great, in her immodest opinion, but that’s no surprise when kt boasts some of the best visuals in the country. pair beautiful faces with black leather and rhinestones and jaws will drop-- as evidenced by a stagehand who does just that. hyeri blows him a kiss and the red-faced youth gasps, flushing and hurrying away as quickly as he’d come. easy.

          “ready?” the stage manager asks and hyeri hears one of her group mates convey the ‘okay’ that brings the inevitable closer. the tall girl exhales slowly, eyes drifting closed as she slowly counts to one hundred to calm her natural jitters. no matter how many times hyeri did this, the anticipation always shook her within in the last seconds; trc being the company to impress (as well as her own) certainly didn’t help. but she’s not alone, for once, and there’s support in taeyeon’s eyes when hyeri meets the older girl’s stare. the dancer’s expression softens and so does her heart-- taeyeon had worked hard, probably the hardest of any of them to learn the high-energy choreography, and that was inspiration enough for hyeri to shelve her nervous feelings at once. as the one to begin the performance, there was no way she’d let anyone see less than her best for a single second.

          there’s no music when they walk out, only the cat-calling and cheers from the girls of their company in the audience who watch. hyeri even fancies she can distinguish tiffany’s voice loudest of all (but it might just be wishful thinking on her part!) she readies herself in the starting position and looks out into the sea of faces staring back at her. expecting things from her. well, she’d show them.

          the electronic beat blares loud from the speakers and hyeri immediately launches into the opening verse. the mic taped to her cheek picks up every word that she chants, a steady rhythm of “i am the best” over and over as the dancer strides forward confidently. they are the best, some of the most talented trainees the big company had to offer. taeyeon’s singing voice could move mountains. she and yeri could dance, drawing interested eyes like moths to a searing flame. soyeon could rap, injecting toughness and that edge of cool to seal the deal of this concept. and mimi-- new though she was, she’d filled in the gaps they’d needed perfectly. a true package of potential for the future. hyeri had no doubts that katie lee would be proud of them.

          ( now if only she’d let them debut. )

he was honestly quite glad to be living with his cousin now, or to have her living with him. his dad wasn’t home much of the time, often staying at the dorms at work to sleep since he was so dedicated to his job. that left the apartment to miles and hugo, and since the man wouldn’t be homes to see the place, there was no harm in decorating it to their tastes, right?

he had allowed miles to pick the colour they were going to paint the walls of the living room, having picked up a few cans of the colour and had set aside the whole day to pull the furniture out of the way, cover the floors, tape the baseboards and of course paint the walls. He finished taping the last bit of the baseboard before turning to her with a wide grin. “ready? the rollers are in the corner. after this we get to go pick some new furniture to match.”

A best friend is more than just a friend, she’s a soulmate that will never screw you, but will touch your heart all the same.

          “so, you’re the new girl?” 

          hyeri strides into the practice room, curiosity lilting her voice as she comes to a stop in front of the mirrors and dumps her duffel bag onto the marley floor. she examines the other girl with unabashed interest and guesses, from her presence here, that this might be the last member of their evaluation group this month. rumors had abounded there was a new face at the company but hyeri hadn’t given much thought to it -- trainees came and went here like clockwork, after all -- until the strange name had appeared on their group configuration.

           kim mihyun, that was it. “i’m lee hyeri,” the dancer introduces herself easily. she lowers her bottom onto the floor and elongates her long legs forward, relaxing them in the usual warm-up. “you haven’t been here long and they’ve already thrown you into an evaluation-- sucks, doesn’t it?” hyeri reaches out with her arms as well and curls her fingers around her toes, exhaling through her nose as she feels her muscles easing into the stretch. “i hope it won’t scare you off yet.”

Miles continued to read on, perfectly tuning out her best friend’s whines. In that respect she picks up on the important threats, one in particular about her book being stolen from. Tearing her gaze away from ‘Pearson’s explanation of ‘Intro to Negligence’, addressed Shannon with a confused stare.

“What do you want?” Gently putting her down the book to her side, away from her best friend’s reach. “Coffee? Now….?”

“Were you even listening to me!?!” She exclaims, stamping her foot on the ground, throwing her arms down by her sides, hands clenched in fists. “I want to spend some damn time with you! You’re always studying! Don’t you know that taking breaks helps you retain the information better? Just 20, 30 minutes. That’s all I want.”

woohyun tries his best to be a supportive, helpful fellow trainee to the rest of his kt mates. it’s in his nature to help and to take care of, so he attempts his best-- taking the time to pop in when he can to check on the kt girls during their performances. he knows he’ll suffer the same fate the following day, so he tries his best to be happy and supporting as he visits, smile on his face as he bows in greeting. he stays long enough to catch the end of one performance, humming and singing the song gently under his breath. he applauds as they finish, wide smile on his face, proud and happy.

he makes sure to keep his general distance for a little bit, until he shuffles-- giving a small little applaud to one of the newer trainees. he can’t remember her name-- knows it starts with an m, which woohyun is kicking himself for not doing more for the younger girl-- like at least knowing her name. he swallows, and shakes his head, rubbing the back of his neck as he greets her with a bow and a soft smile.

“how are you hanging in there?” he questions quietly, shifting in place as his head cocks to the side. “i know most of the other girls are used to this-- but i just wanna make sure you’re doing okay. and probably snag a water bottle from you, as well. if you don’t mind.” he beams at the girl. “going to support you in anyway i can!”

some people blamed him and detested him for leaving seoul about a year ago. he had his reasons for why he left, reasons that he chose not to disclose to most of the people he knew. he had told a couple people as to why he left but luhan knew it was simple; he left because he had to help out his mother with her business trips. in the end, he got dragged along knowing that she was stressing out way too much.

now that he had been back in town, he knew why some people wanted to avoid him. with the exception of the friend he was hanging out with now, mimi. one of the few that would understand. she was really kind and sweet, a positive ray of sunshine that the deer wanted to be around. “hey you, shall we catch up on our old tales?” he tilted his head curiously, looking over at his friend with a small smile.
