TRC ENTERTAINMENT
TRIPLE THREAT CHALLENGE
CHALLENGER ; KIM YUGYEOM
selections ; nct 7th sense ( singing / rapping 1:11 - 1:55 )
i’ll show you { dancing 0:00 - 1:05 }
it was a last minute performance. he hadn’t intended to go to this audition, at least not to actually partake. a few of his friends were auditioning so yugyeom wanted to be there to support them and cheer them on from the crowd. probably tease and taunt them once they got off stage depending on what they did.
but the night before he had suddenly been filled with inspiration and had all but hauled his boyfriend out of bed to the dance studio well into the night. he’s glad that minhyuk is so understanding and willing to put up with his some times chaotic ways. that the younger had not only come with him to the studio but also helped him figure out his dance had made yugyeom al kinds of soft.
he’s so in love.
back on topic. his inspiration had been watching some LC9 performances, specifically their maknae jun and his solo stages. then as he had been scrolling his music library the song had hit him. when you mix both the inspiration and the song, it kind of makes sense why this whole audition performance came out with more of a thot vibe than yugyeom had really intended. not that, thats saying much as yugyeom himself often comes off with a hoe sort of vibe. or so he’s been told. and his dance style really reflects that.
when called to the stage he started off with a brief introduction before settling in for the first step of his performance. he was starting with his singing, rapping part which he was doing to another rather popular group. he’ll admit to not being much of a vocalist or rapper--at least not compared to his dancing--but it’s not his first time performing like. not the first time he’s sang or rapped and he likes to think he’s getting the hang of it the more he does it. he’s at least able to keep steady, his more nasel singing voice coming out without much breathiness. at least not right now, he couldn’t even imagine how he would sound if he had tried to dance and sing. it’s why his dancing was a whole different part.
he might be stable enough when singing right now but he was only doing a short part and he was standing still as he did.
the next and final part was his dance. he got into position and easily went through the motions him and his boyfriend had run through for hours it seemed. he even had a white blindfold to cover over his eyes because thats what they had choreographed into the dance. something he had been playing around with and ended up going with.
this life’s not easy
i’m not made out of steel
don’t forget that i’m human
don’t forget that i’m real
act like you know me but you never will
but there’s one thing that i know for sure
i’ll show you.
he’ll easily admit that he isn’t triple threat material, his singing could use a whole lot of work, but if there’s anyone watching who isn’t looking for a triple threat then maybe they would snatch him because of his dancing.
call him cocky but yugyeom is confident with his dancing.
After the news and with the whole being in two different companies, there was only one thing Jinwoo could do: run the Seocho complex thin in trying to locate Minhyuk the moment he stepped foot there. Granted he could simply just have texted him and asked where he was, but that would take away the surprise of the encounter. Plus the excitement and anticipation that was in it for Jinwoo was also driving him in his footsteps up and down hallways, in and out rooms.
Countless apologies for intruding on strangers later, he finally located the one he was looking for and immediately his face cracked into the biggest smile he had worn in a long time as he rose a hand. “Yo!” he called to catch Minhyuk’s attention and then pranced the rest of the way over to the other’s side. Holding up his hand for a fist bump, Jinwoo continued his greeting.
“You’re really here man. I mean I knew you’d be because you told me, but actually seeing you here feels so weird!” A heartfelt laugh escaped him. “How’re you hanging in there? What are you up to? How’s TRC?” his questions bombarded his friends only for Jinwoo to realise that Minhyuk probably needed time to adjust as he himself had needed back then. To think it had already been one and a half year. TIme really flied.
“No no, scratch that, I’m sorry,” he apologised, waving a hand before himself as if to wipe the board clean. “Is there anything you don’t understand that I can help you with? I know I had like at least a million questions myself when I got signed, and not knowing anyone was kind of hard. How about evaluations? Are you joining for this month?”
this was, without a doubt, the most ambitious thing he had decided to do for his youtube. only last month he had decided to branch out into trying to dance and rap at the same time. but even compared to that this was a hard swerve in the opposite direction - taking out the rap completely and focusing on the dancing instead.
if this worked out, this was going to be one of the best covers he had ever done. but first, it was the work of trying to find people to do this crazy idea with him. the song was not popular and not many people had listened to it. not to mention they whole song was done incorporating the use of heely’s as well. dancing was one thing, but dancing with a wheel on each foot was a completely different story and there were most likely to be falls.
it took some time to assemble enough people, by either approaching them at school during lunch breaks and by putting out some feelers through twitter to see if anyone bit. and they did, before too long, he had five willing volunteers to try and get this dance cover down so he could upload it. the deadline was set to the end of feburary and for a very long time hohyeon wasn’t sure if they were going to reach that goal. it was hard enough to learn a dance, even more so trying to learn how to use heely’s as well.
as expected, there were quite a few falls, hohyeon managed to sprain his wrist at one point after completely collapsing on it, but he powered on through. he knew this was going to be hard and was not about to give up.
the mastery of the shoes on his feet came slow, but with extra practice in them by just going to school wearing them and wearing them out, he started to feel comfortable in them. his mother still thought he was crazy for wanting to do something like this, but the ever supportive woman she was had no intentions of stopping him and was always there to patch him up if he happened to fall and get hurt.
weeks and solo and group practices later, hohyeon was comfortable enough that they were all good enough to start recording this video. right from the start they had decided to share the more acrobatic parts of the dance between the willing members, not wanting one person to just do them all. it cut down on arguments and was also just easier to learn one complicated move instead of multiple of them.
the day they were going to be recording this, hyeon made sure to arrive bright and early, giving him enough time to set up the camera he had borrowed from school properly. even as he moved around the room to make sure everything was set up he found himself just wheeling around instead of walking. he’d come to love having wheels on his feet, it was far easier than walking for him and now and he wouldn’t be surprised if he found himself wearing heely’s more often and just zipping around the place.
slowly the other five started to trickle into the room and, once they were all assembled and warmed up, the real work began.
he had been hoping to just get this over and done with during one run through, but o course that was just wishful thinking. almost as soon as the music started for the first time, hohyeon managed to put a foot wrong and completely messed it up meaning they started once again. and they just kept going, hohyeon didn’t want to stop until everything was completely perfect. no mistakes or slips or one person moving before everyone else, even if it was just by a second. this was going to be perfect and it was going to be glorious.
when the music started again for what felt like the hundredth time, hohyeon started moving his head to the beat, pushing away from the wall with his hands with the others, wheeling towards the middle of the room. he was determined not to make any mistakes this time, this was going to be the perfect version he wanted and he had confidence in the others to do it. he admired them and knew they were talented dancers, so he really shouldn't worry about them.
the music just moved through him, full concentration on what each of his limbs were doing, trying to do most of the dancing on the balls of his feet to avoid the wheels in his heels until he needed them. it was strange, feet heavier thanks to the extra weight, but it was something he had grown used to.
when they reached the first chorus he really started to get into things, seamlessly following the movements, keeping in time with the bodies either side of him. though he was tired from the previous attempts, feet starting to ache and sweat forming on his brow, the teenager pushed through all of that. he just wanted to nail this so one day he could look back on this and be proud of what he had accomplished. and he could rely on the five others around him to put in their best efforts as well. he was glad he had decided to do this as a group and not just a solo cover. now he people to rely on and he was sure this was not the last time he was ever going to talk to them.
a smile started to form on his face, completely enveloped by the movements, the sound of the music drumming in his ears, the sound of the in rhythm footsteps on the wooden floor under his feet. just the sound alone was enough to help him keep going, putting in maximum effort until the very last beat of the music. though he could never completely zone out, having to be careful as he wheeled around not to crash into anyone else. thankfully, they were doing this on a flat surface. he had learned the hard way how hard it was to wheel around on a bumpy and uneven surface.
though he was taking this seriously, it was still rather fun. he almost laughed at one point as he spun around on his wheels, moving to his next position. there was an almost freeing feeling which came with this choreography, almost addictive.
the song was reaching it’s final moments now, and hohyeon had not put a foot or a hand put of place the whole choreography. and the teen was determined to finish off strong, keeping his eyes focused on the camera at the front filming all of this as he did his last couple of steps, putting the top of his foot down to stop his movement forward, folding his arms across his chest in what he thought was a cool pose to finish, a smile on his face and chest heaving with the effort he had just gone through.
dance had always taken a back position in his list of things he loved doing, rapping remaining right at the top for years now, but just doing this was making him think about that, made him start having other thoughts about how seriously he wanted to take his dancing as well.
it would be something to consider once this was all said and done.

When Minhyuk had first approached him about this idea, frankly Eric had been surprised. Although the other was one of the most talented dancers he knew, but as far as he knew Minhyuk’s forte wasn’t exactly girl group dances. Heck, he had even questioned Eric about it once upon a time so it felt peculiar that his friend was the one to suggest covering a dance by female artists. Not that he minded in the slightest. He absolutely loved the song and the opportunity to get to do a cover with someone else too was really interesting. Even more so when Minhyuk had said that he had friends who could help out with it.
And well, it was most certainly an experience. Hohyeon was cool, Eric had to admit that. He was a great dancer and Eric was almost embarrassed that he had never seen him around the internet before, especially with how he liked to keep track of other youtube dancers. But he had to admit that even he couldn’t get around to everyone -- he had simply promised that from now on he was going to keep an eye out for him and had even subscribed to the guy’s channel right there on the spot.
In a sense he supposed that Hyojeong and that Yugyeom fella were also pretty neat. Hyojeong could add the feminine touch to their movements that they were lacking, and Yugyeom’s dancing style was really inspiring and interesting. From a professional viewpoints he didn’t have any issues with working together with them. There was just the small fact that it seemed like the two of them actually couldn’t stand each other. Most of the time they could set aside their differences long enough to actually be able to practice and film properly, but the moment the music stopped they were at each other’s throats again, and so many times had Eric lingered around Minhyuk and Hohyeon to seek comfort in them in the midst of the storm.
“Minhyuk hyung,” he had called out to the older dancer in a silent moment in between practice. “I love you, but don’t ever make me work together with those two at the same time again.” Once was more than enough. It wasn’t that he would mind working together with them again, it just had to be individually next time or he feared that he might lose his mind, which was saying a lot when it came to Eric. He just didn’t deal well with people fighting around him at all.
Somehow they had all made it through alive -- the footage was shot and their ways were parted, and all that was left was to edit the footage and put it up. Him and Minhyuk had agreed to doing it separately as they had different ways of placing their focus and after all needed the videos on their respective channels dedicated to their respective audiences used to their way of doing things. Not that too much would be changed in the end, just a bit of touching up on the light and audio, but it was a point that still stood.
With a press of the upload button his first collaboration experience had come to an end.
“Let’s see… Dodo, Buttmin, Momjin, Swag rock, and Woocasso are my main squeezes. They’re more commonly known as Doyeon, Dongmin, Jinwoo, Minhyuk, and Sunwoo. I’m also pretty close with Jongin and do consider him my best friend within the company. But I’m always up for collecting more best friends!”
getting the card from the sphere representative had come as a surprise to yugyeom. when his name wasn’t one of the ones called for the challenge, he thought that would be it. he loitered around to talk with the friends still there, congratulated the ones he knew who had gotten called back but was otherwise ready to head home with his boyfriend and have a relaxing evening. his mind had been wondering to dinner and the likes.
yet, unlike what he thought, surprises were not done yet.
see, yugyeom had decided super last minute to try for trcs triple threat. it had come to him when he was tossing and turning the night before and he realized he couldn’t let this opportunity pass without trying. it’s not in him to not try. turns out it was for a good thing because even if trc didn’t notice him (the company of his dreams really) someone had.
the next day during work--after having admitted to the ahjummas why he was so distracted--he made the call. got all set up for an audition at sphere entertainment, and it hadn’t sunk in until he was standing at the company entrance that holy shit this is happening. sphere would be nice to get into, he thinks. it’s not trc, which he loves, but sphere is another good company. plus yien is already in the company and so is kibum who he doubts even remembers him at this point. plus it’s not impossible that trc could eventually get a hold of him.
regardless, he was set and ready. he was going in to the audition with a choreo that he’d only just finished monday night. a dance he had been putting together before the triple threat challenge that he had planned to record a video for next week after a bit more practice. but turns out he would be showing it off today. always better to use something you’ve been focusing on already. he knows the dance, even though he hasn’t had the time to really stick it in his mind--he’s confident that he wont mess up.
it’s dancing after all. and yugyeom is a dancer through and through.
once in position, the music from his small usb ready to go, yugyeom feels his nerves finally form. small, but noticeable. like a ball settled in his chest. this is is he thinks this could change my life and if that doesn’t make the nerves worse.
he takes a breath, pictures minyuk in his mind. he tries thinking that this is no different from busking. from getting in front of all those strangers who record and film him to post to instagram and youtube so anything he does is on the internet. he thinks of minhyuk. thinks of all the times they’ve wasted away in a studio when yugyeom would show off a new dance. or when they just mess around.
he lets out the breath.
yeah you’re a natural.
once in the right mindset, the nerves melt away bit by bit as he starts dancing. his body moving to the music with the ease that only comes from years upon years of dancing. the music and him become apart of each other. though he knows at some points his expression is a bit pinched especially with the parts of the choreo that he doesn’t know as well. he manages to keep going.
near the middle where the bridge of the song is he has a small slip up where he does forget the next parts, his arms up and theres a moment of hesitation before he falls easily into a free style. hoping his mistake wasn’t seen. given that no one has seen this dance before, the odds of them knowing were silm. but the companies are use to catching these things. they have to so they can make their idols perfect.
as the music fades and his dance ends, yugyeom feels annoyance flare through him as his mistake comes to mind. he bows, and thanks them for his time. but as he’s leaving he’s internally berating himself. luckily he has the day off from work, which will not be spent in the studio.
After Tigek JK’s announcement backstage the contestants are told the show is over and they may go home. Before you leave, however, a man quickly stops you on your tracks. “Hello! I hope you’re not too disheartened.” While he speaks, the man tries to take something from inside his jacket “We really liked your performance.” The card contains SPHERE Entertainment’s contacting information on it. “Give us a call and we can schedule an audition for you. Just think about it.” And so the agent walks away without much any more information to give.
having decided last minute to do this trc challenge thing, yugyeom wasn’t very pressed when his name wasn’t one of the ones called. realistically he knew the chances would be slim, he isn’t a triple threat for one thing. hearing who won was a shock--but only just as yugyeom has seen the kid practice before and seen him busk so he knows hyunjoon’s got something going for him--and then even more so when he hears the name of friends like dongmin.
dongmin in trc would be fucking hilarious. is the only thing he can think.
he’s lost minhyuk in the crowd, and was planning to step back a bit to try and spot his boyfriend so they could head out when someone cut him off. the dancer blinking at the guy in confusion because who the fuck is this dude?
the second shock of the night is felt when the dude pulls out a sphere business card and hands it to him. yugyeom accepting after a moment and staring at it. the dudes words register in his mind but when he looks up he can see him vanishing into the crowd again. what the fuck? so other companies had been watching--he guesses that isn’t surprising... all five are connected plush something like this is a good way to find other talent.
but fuck sphere was interested in him?
laughter escapes him as he pockets the card and continues on his quest to find his wayward boyfriend. he couldn’t believe someone from sphere just stopped him. he’s got to talk to jinyoung and minyuk before he decides anything--though he’s pretty sure he’ll end up calling. with jinyoung getting called back for trc there’s a chance his hyung could also end up signed again. and yugyeom would be stupid to pass up the chance of being in the same company as yien.
the evening turned out more interesting than he thought.
( OOC: Congratulations on being scouted by SPHERE! In case your muse is interested, they may schedule their audition anytime between the 22nd and 7th IC. ❪ Q! ❫ everyone that means something to you in this world has left you, but you have one wish to bring one person back -- who would it be?
it’s jinyoung and minhyuk who come to mind first but the question says only one person. if he had lost everyone but he could bring back one person who he cares about. but only one. yugyeom knows it would boil down to these two people. the hyung who has been with him since he was little, or the boy who has come to be the reason for yugyeoms desire to get better. it’s hard, to face this decision. “....at the end of the day, i think....i think minhyuk.” he hesitates again, the words coming out as more of a question. “it would be jinyoung hyung or minhyuk. hyung has been like--no has been my brother since forever, we grew up together and i owe him so much for all he’s done for me. i probably wouldn’t be here today if not for him....” he trails off.
“but...i can’t rely on him for ever. he won’t let me live with him for the rest of his life. eventually he’ll want to settle down and get married and maybe have kids--or his career could take off and he could just be too busy. i’m not saying this as a like ah pity me im going to be abandoned because i know he wouldn’t just drop me like that but... it’s how life goes? people move one, move into new relationships and new situations. you don’t live with your family forever.”
“and...and minhyuk... he’s my future, yeah? he’s who i see myself with five, ten years down the road. i know we only just got together like a week ago but. i don’t know, with him it always feels so right. and maybe i’m just being like a dumb kid or whatever, but this is how i feel. i look at minhyuk and i want to be a better person. i look at him and i see myself being content no matter where i end up in life as long as i have him with him.” he blushes as he realizes how cheesy he is starting to sound, hands curling on reflex as he cringes at his own words. “i love jinyoung hyung, i cherish him so much and i’ll never be more grateful to have a brother like him.... but i would choose minhyuk everytime.”
