The rules
Answer the questions from the person who tagged you
Write 11 new ones
Tag 11 people and link them to the post
Actually tell them you tagged them
1. What’s the longest thing you’ve even written and how long did it take you to write?
A Warriors fanfiction. It was a trilogy and each volume was over 400,000 words. I kept lagging on it so it took me longer than it should have. I'm going to go out on a limb and say...7...years...
I started it in seventh grade and kept going until
ashamedly recently
(Amazingly I had some of the same readers throughout. We literally grew up together while we read/wrote about talking cats.)
2. If you could have any animal as a pet, which would you choose?
A rabbit. I love bunnies, I really do, almost as much as beheadings. The fact that I already have a rabbit doesn't change how happy I am with them.
3. If you could ask any historical figure one and only one question, what would it be (and who would you ask)?
This question qualifies as cruel and unusual punishment.
I'd ask Robespierre something I'm sure but I'm afraid I wouldn't ask him anything substantial. I'd likely ask him about his relationship with the eldest Duplay daughter rather than any substantial historical overhaul.
4. What do you think the world will look like in 2050?
Very similar to now, actually. Fashions will change and I hope we have cleanlier methods of transportation but overall the world marches on at a steady pace.
5. Which seasons do you like most and least?
I love Winter. The whole world changes color and it's nice and brisk; if I get too cold I can put on a sweater and can sadistically alienate my friends by hitting them with snowballs.
I dislike Spring because while the world is changing color again, I don't like that palette as much.
6. What are your ten favorite non-fiction books?
Égalitarisme Jacobin et Droits de l’Homme : la Grande Famille et la Terreur by Jean-Pierre Gross
Maximilien Robespierre: Portrait of a Revolutionary Democrat by George Rude
La Revolution Francaise by Albert Mathiez
Saint-Just: Colleague of Robespierre by Eugene Curtis
The Life And Opinions of Maximilien Robespierre by Norman Hampson (I should add here that I don't enjoy this book because I adhere to any three of the interpretations Hamspon offers but rather because I immensely admire an historian who underscores the subjectivity of his field rather than parading as objectivity personified. I disagree with Hampson but he never insults my intelligence or morality for doing so; in fact, he welcomes and invites me to interact with his text. It's beautiful.)
The Creation of Anne Boleyn by Susan Bordo (Combo breaker! But I like this work for many of the reasons I like Hampson's. It's also popular history and outlines basic tenets of historiography for even casual readers, spreading the doctrine of questioning your source to a multitude.)
Defense of the Terror by Sophie Wahnich (I have but the English copy. But I suppose it's more philosophy than straight-up nonfiction.)
Richard III by Paul-Murray Kendall. (This book...it was what first got the spur in me to question standing reputations and orthodoxy.)
Robespierre et les Femmes by Hecter Fleishmann (OKAY LOOK! REAL TALk! I...this book is gushy and corny and kooky and cute. I don't really respect it as a work of legitimate scholarship but I smile whenever I'm reading it.)
And last but not fucking least:
Echoes of the Marseilles by E.J Hobsbawm (Screw nonfiction, it might be my favorite book of all time. It just traces Revisionism's rise to dominance in regards to the study of the French Revolution and then proceeds to slap its thesis silly. It's a rollicking good time, if you are of the Revisionist-slapping persuasion.)
7. How many languages do you know and what are they? Are there any you don’t know but would like to learn?
One and a half. I'm fluent in all things English but possess but reading-French ability. I would like to become more proficient in French (hey , grammar would be nice!) and learn Russian one day.
8. Hypothetically, even if you’re not planning on having kids, is the name of your favorite historical figure and/or fictional character a name that you would consider giving to a child? (Alternatively, is it a name you think no child should be saddled with?)
If I have a son, I'm partial to the idea of naming him 'Albert' after Mathiez, who is my favorite historian regarding Robespierre...does that count?
9. If you had a time machine and could go to any era you wanted but it wasn’t certain whether or not you would be able to come back, would you go?
No.
10. You’ve been given enough time, money, access to filming sites, etc. to make any film (or TV show) you want; what is it about?
Robespierre. A 36-season show chronicling his life from beginning to end. No one would enjoy it but me.
11. What do you want for your birthday this year?
A Starlux Robespierre figure. (My birthday's in 7 days, btw!)
My Questions:
Where do you see yourself in 10 years, ideally?
Do you have any guilty pleasures?
What are your 5 favorite works of fiction?
Why do you like them?
Is your reputation important to you?
You can bring one fictional character/historical figure to/back to life to live with you. Who is it and why?
You're being beheaded tomorrow. What's your last request?
You have a beloved OC. Would you rather be published as the author of their story only to have them attract minimal attention or one day, coincidentally and miraculously, see the same character appear in a very popular work that you were uninvolved in, attracting a devoted but friendly fandom? [Assume the character was not stolen, just thought-up identically by another craftsperson.]
What is your favorite television show currently on air?
Would you prefer to be a Ruler of Hell or a Servant in Heaven?
If there was one crime you could commit repeatedly and never got caught, what would you commit if anything? (Ie, theft; you could steal anything you wanted from who you wanted but never endure legal repercussions)
