Normal 19th century guys with normal role models
Based on my own post
like, I myself have also never lived on the rez so I can really only speak to the experiences I’ve had shared with me by friends and family—and frankly, there are some things my loved ones just straight up won’t even talk about because it was just that fucking bad. but with the way some folks on this site (in particular, as I’ve mentioned before, white Europeans who seem to have convinced themselves that just because they’re not American means they’re absolved of all the evils of white supremacy and imperialism) talk about Native people living in the imperial core it feels really clear to me that a lot of these people have never even, like, attempted to so much as imagine just how fucking bad the conditions on most reservations are. they’re certainly not doing any research into it. just, like, speaking loudly and confidently about how privileged we are to live in the US without a shred of consideration for the fact that these places were intentionally constructed to have the worst living conditions possible. and like that’s not to say that you can’t have any semblance of a good life there, I’ve also heard so many stories of joy and love and community on the rez and I don’t want to take away from that. but those things are hard fought for through the fucking incredible power and resilience of what it is to be a native person surviving genocide, they happen IN SPITE of all the odds stacked against us. I promise that you as a white person in fucking France or whatever are not worse off than generations of people forced into reservations, with extremely limited access to food and clean water and healthcare. for real.
and of course the justification is always “oh well that’s such a small percentage of the US population though” as if that’s not literally the same logic used by the government to allow these people to continue to suffer, and as though population percentage is supposed to make me just stop caring about my relatives. like that just doesn’t make you look better. and if you’re from a colonizing European country it was your fucking ancestors that created the conditions that led to people suffering today. shut the fuck up!
crabs are so gentle, they can be so kind. their claws? precise little things, so careful in the sand, so careful with food. they do what they must to live and wave their claws to express their joy to the world for giving so much to them, for giving such kindness to these creatures known as crabs. please be gentle to crabs

Collins is gone.
Namaygoosisagagun First Nation/Collins has burned to the ground. The entire community is nothing but ashes after being quickly consumed by wildfires. They did not have any support from emergency services, and no one offered aid. The community saved themselves by escaping into boats because no one came.
Mishkeegogamang and Cat Lake have lost power. Families are ending up in shelters with nothing. Armstrong, Lac La Croix, Whitesand, Gull Bay, Lac des Mille Lacs are currently in the fires path and all members are being evacuated.
All this loss, all this devastation, and it was entirely preventable.
After steadily underfunding wildland firefighting and purposefully excluding Indigenous wildland firefighters and Indigenous wildfire organizations from wildfire operations, firefighter training, decisionmaking, and resource exchanges, in 2025, Doug Ford slashed the forest firefighting budget.
It's hard to ignore his decision to cut funding and leave us out of adequate fire training (even though we've lived with forest fires for thousands of years—far longer than settlers have been in Canada—and made sure fires like the ones we're all seeing today were prevented through kinisitotēn) when, despite making up less than 5% of the population, we account for 42% percent of all wildfire evacuations in Canada.
And when we are successfully evacuated, we face discrimination and racism—like Kashechewan—because it's always been easier to blame us than it is to blame the true culprit: denialism, corportate greed, and colonization.
The people of Collins and every other impacted community deserve better.
Right now, the AFN is currently accepting donations to help Collins First Nation. If you're able to, please consider donating.
ONWA (Ontario Native Women's Association) is another great place to donate to. They have outreach vans going to motels and inns and offering food, water, resources, and cultural support to those impacted by the wildfires.
Other places to consider donating to are Mikinakoos Emergency Fund, Red Cross, True North Aid, Indigenous Climate Action. You can also send donations directly to Whitesand First Nation via e-transfer ([email protected]) and they request that you add your full name in the e-transfer comment section to receive a tax receipt.
*Before sending money, verify that the appeal appears on an official First Nation, Tribal Council or registered charity channel.
If you can't offer financial support, please consider donating items of need. Moontime Connections is currently accepting drop-off donations. If you live in the Thunder Bay area, Namaygoosisagagun Health Office is also taking in donations! They can also bemailed to Superior Inn Hotel & Conference Centre at 555 West Arthur Street, Thunder Bay, ON, P7E 5P8.
items needed are: food, diapers, medical masks, men’s and women’s joggers (all sizes), children’s clothing (newborn to size 14), children’s shoes, summer clothing, men’s clothing, toiletries (lotion, Vaseline, toothpaste, toothbrushes, shampoo, conditioner, soap, deodorant, etc.), strollers, adult depends-all sizes, dog & cat food

Bury My Heart (Galehaut Laid to Rest)
"HERE LIES GALEHAUT THE SON OF THE GIANTESS, THE LORD OF THE DISTANT ISLES, WHO DIED FOR THE LOVE OF LANCELOT" "And Lancelot himself lay his companion to rest inside the tomb. After he had laid Galehaut down, he kissed him three times on the mouth in such agony that his heart nearly leapt out of his chest. " - Lancelot Part IV (Lancelot-Grail /Vulgate Cycle)
I haven't completed a traditional drawing in pencil in years after switching almost completely to digital. There was a few times I almost gave up in the sketch phase, so I'm proud of myself for seeing it through.
Its been genuinely healing to work on this and pour my heart for these two.
If I ever have the time I'd really like to make a short comic of the events that transpire between Lancelot finding Galehaut's original grave and bringing him home so that they may eventually rest together. (Note: I did add a blue wash on the background since I wanted to leave the original drawing in pencil with no paint or marker. I'll be sharing the original drawing with no digital edits, some color tests (since I still plan to do a colored version), and a deep dive on the many references/inspirations behind this piece on Patreon later this month.)

Other people have touched on this more eloquently, but I love that Ryland Grace is at his core a teacher. A middle school science teacher. Sure, his background as a former academic is also critical to the story, mostly because something about him needed to catch Stratt's eye and thus result in him getting dragged into the project, but more importantly than that, he hated being in academia. The book makes it fairly explicit that he wrote his controversial paper and insulted a leading scientist in his field because he was burnt out and hated the environment and got self-destructive as a result, which is a far less rosy view of academic science than I would have expected (and, frankly, completely believable).
And then he left and became a middle school science teacher. And that turned out to be his real calling. He was bright and creative and a little bit brilliant and a genuinely good scientist, and he gave that world up to teach kids and he loved it. Even after everything, after the Petrova Taskforce and Project Hail Mary and Tau Ceti and ultimately ending up on Erid, his calling is to teach kids.
As someone who has dipped in and out of the science communication/science education world myself, it's so important to me that Grace loves teaching, and especially that he loves teaching kids. People really devalue science communication work, and there's often this unspoken assumption that the people doing it just aren't "smart enough" to become real scientists, so they do scicomm instead. And everything about Grace flies in the face of that -- he's perfectly capable of doing the science, but it's not what he loves the most! What he loves and values and finds important is teaching, and I adore that. It's so refreshing to see, and such a genuine love letter to educators, and to everyone who chooses to prioritize communication and education regardless of how specialized they may or may not be in their field.
His happy ending is to be a teacher. And that's so important.

STOP calling Stratt a girlboss. People will excuse anything she does under the guise of “feminism” while completely ignoring that she’s a white German woman causing extensive ecological damage that will disproportionately affect people of color. Fuck you and fuck Eva Stratt I hope she goes to prison for life after all this

While stratt’s definitely caused environmental damage, both projects you mentioned were in earth’s best interest: the paving of the sahara was to get enough astrophage for the mission that’s literally our last hope for survival (and the countries get to keep the infrastructure afterwards), and antactica was to minimize climate cooling. There’s a lot to question ethically but it’s not as straightforward as you’re making it sound. And yeah this will most heavily impact third world countries but the astrophage crisis was going to do that already??? I just don’t think you can blame the racist structures of the global economy on one woman and frankly people’s tendency to pin everything on her is a bit misogynistic.
Also she’s dutch, not german.
