“Byler wouldn’t have had an impact” oh so you don’t remember when vol I came out and everyone were making videos of their childhood pictures with Robins speech in the background?
Your 'Girl' - Part 2
Part 1
Pairing: Steve Harrington x reader
Summary: Despite moments of genuine reprieve, you wonder whether things with Steve can ever truly be salvaged, especially when someone else reminds you of exactly what you've been missing for so long. (Scenes from Stranger Things Season 4)
Warnings: Angst, self doubt, implied infidelity in established relationship, no use of y/n
"Dustin, can you hear me? Dustiiiiin?"
A distant hum permeates through your head. A low, static-filled sound you realize with an eye-opening jolt is a voice.
You slowly uncurl yourself from Steve's side where you'd fallen asleep after the previous draining, harrowing day, wanting nothing more than comfort, atleast for a little while. And despite everything you'd been feeling, all the unacknowledged tension between the two of you, there wasn't a place where you felt safer than in Steve's arms.
"Earth to Dustiiin, helloooo-"
You sit up on the couch, neck and back stiffening in dull protest as you blink your eyes back into focus, trying to narrow down to the source of the crackling voice.
Your eyes fall onto Dustin's walkie, discarded on a random box in the maze that was Mike Wheeler's basement, and you scramble over to it, dropping to your knees before bringing the device to your lips.
"This is Eddie, The Banished-"
"Hey, Eddie? It's-"
"Harrington's goddess of a girlfriend? Yeah, I'd recognize that voice anywhere." The smirk in his voice is evident, and your cheeks heat up. A small smile creeps onto your face at the unexpected compliment.
"Thanks?" You chuckle softly, unsure of what else to say.
"Only telling the truth," Eddie responds in a matter-of-fact voice, as if the idea of you being beautiful was as normal and ordinary as the sun coming up in the East.
You realize then how long it's been since you've heard a genuine compliment like this, how long it's been since you've felt warm, fuzzy feeling in your chest that only comes from feeling.... beautiful.
The thought renders you silent for a moment, before Eddie speaks up once anymore. "Anyways, I was calling because I'm going to need a food delivery... and uhh- real quick too.... unless you want me going out into the real world?-"
"What? No. No no no," you quickly interject, bringing the walkie closer to your face. "Just stay where you are, and we'll try to be there as soon as we can."
"Yeah, and uh- listen... could you pick me up a six pack on the way?
You blink, the question catching you off guard.
"Eddie-," you start, a disbelieving chortle escaping your lips.
"I know, I know it's stupid as hell drinking right now, but a could beer would really help calm my jangled nerves-"
"Dustin! Dustin wake up!"
You flip your head around, your gaze falling on a frantic Nancy furiously shaking a drowsy Dustin by the shoulders.
"Wha-"
"Dustin, weren't you supposed to be on Max watch?"
"Oh, oh yep. Yep yep yep," he mutters, rubbing his eyes.
"Then where is she?"
Both your and Dustin's eyes fall to the armchair where you'd last seen Max, now blaringly empty, sheets rumpled and creased.
"She was just here! I-I swear I just dozed off for..." Dustin trails off. "An hour..."
Stark terror shoots down your belly, scenes from the day before flooding your mind- Max on the ground in front of Billy's grave, her eyes rolled up in her head, Lucas desperately shaking her body, screaming at her to wake up, and then as she'd risen into the air.....
"I'm going to have to go, Eddie..." you whisper.
"Wait, wait, no-"
But you've already put the walkie aside, getting to your feet before pounding up the basement stairs, Nancy and Dustin hot on your heels.
You burst into the kitchen, mouth open in a frantic question-
Before your eyes fall to the shock of red hair and blue sweater at the Wheelers' dining table.... and the sudden adrenaline drains out of you in a dizzying second, a weary sigh escaping your lips.
Within the next hour, you were all stepping out of Steve's car, parked in front of the enormous dilapidated structure that was The Creel House, nestled in the midst of thick, overgrown foliage and tall, looming trees like the epitome of abandonment and disuse.
"Yeah, that's not creepy," Steve mutters from beside you.
You tilt your head to look up at him, and catch him gazing at the massive mansion, thick brows furrowed in a crease that make you bite the inside of your cheek. A single lock of silky hair slipped into his eyes and you fight the urge to reach up and brush it aside, to let your hand linger there for a second, fingers brushing his soft skin...
You know you've been staring when Steve's eyes flick over to you. But you can't bring yourself to look away, even as a small smile spreads over his lips, that rugged, boyish look that normally made you weak in the knees. And it still did, God knows it did, but you couldn't ignore the churn of unresolved feelings simmering in your chest, weighing down the love you felt for him underneath a mountain of doubt and insecurity.
Steve raises his eyebrows, coffee eyes shining with a hesitant hope, maybe fueled by the fact that you'd spent the night curled up in each other, maybe by the way you're looking at him now, or maybe by his own faith in your... in your relationship... in his love for you.
"Help me break down this door, babe?"
Bracing a hand on the indented wood, you drag a knife down the edges of the wood panelling, the aged material groaning under your ministrations.
"So what exactly are we supposed to be looking for in this shithole?" Steve asks, trying to loosen a nail on the other side of the wood.
"We're not sure," you say uncertainly. "All we know is that this place is important to Vecna."
"Because Max saw it in Vecna's red soup mind world?" He asks, shooting you a look out of the corner of his eye.
You bite your lip. "Basically."
"Great."
"Maybe it holds a clue to where Vecna is," Dustin supplies. "Why he's back. Why he killed the Creels."
"And how to stop him before he comes back for Max," Nancy adds.
"Wait..." Lucas says slowly. "We don't think he's in here... do we?"
You and Steve pause your work, giving each other a look you don't exactly know the meaning of yourself.
"Guess we'll find out," Max mutters.
You take a deep breath and shake your head, just as Steve calls your name.
"You ready, sweetheart?"
You nod, taking a careful step to the side, before letting the panel drop from your hands, Steve doing the same.
It falls to the ground, a loud, heavy thump shaking the ground beneath your feet, soft plumes of dust rising into the air, revealing a light wooden door at the centre of which lay embedded a stained glass window.
"Okay," Nancy says decisively. "Let's slip up into groups. Robin, upstairs with me."
Robin shoots you a smile, along with an emphatic blink of her eyes at Steve you know had to have meant something, while Max grabs Lucas's arm and leads him away down the hall.
Leaving you and Steve together in the darkness, the dim light of your torch the only source of brightness in an otherwise dreary space.
Your eyes meet, and you can just about make out the slight part of Steve's lips. The shadows made it hard to gauge the expression on your boyfriend's face, and something about the idea scared you. Of what lay beyond the veil of black that masked how he felt being alone with you for the first time in days. While Robin walked together with-
"Let's go, guys!" Dustin calls out, already hollering up the stairs, and you jolt out of your momentary trance, the moment broken.
"Well you heard the little shit," Steve says resignedly.
And you follow Dustin up the stairs, your heart giving a tiny little jump in your chest at what was to come.
A/N: I hear your thoughts on Steve, and I promise I know where I'm going with this! We all know which scene comes next.... 🕷 🕸
