January 2018 | RENEWAL & NEW BEGINNINGS
A new year, a new start. Or, is it more of the same? Do time markers, like calendars, hold spiritual, magical or mystical powers? Can the start of a new year really foster a new beginning, despite the seeds planted of yesteryear? A beginning cannot happen without something, first, having come to an end. What influence does an ending have on a beginning? Is there such a thing as a clean slate? Humans begin dying immediately after they take their first newborn breaths. Yet, humans cling to the idea of rebirths and new beginnings, whether through religious or spiritual practices or via mundane activities such as moving into a new space. What does rebirth mean to you? What are your experiences with endings, renewal, or new beginnings? Submit by December 25th!

Robocup Press was founded for the specific purpose of publishing and promoting that which is different, unique or marginalized. We call ourselves “a home for literary misfits” because we are committed to providing “literary housing” to writers and artists who may be "misfits" in society because of their race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, religion, ability, etc., or to those whose work may not fit in with literary genre norms. Robocup Press is a home for hybrid/cross-genre and other eclectic projects. It is a home for poetry. It is a home for underrepresented voices.
So, when our government takes a complete 180-degree spin towards: (a) exclusion rather than inclusion; (b) marginalization of the already marginalized; (c) racism, bigotry, misogyny, homophobia and transphobia; (d) state-sanctioned Islamophobia; and (e) war against the media and freedom of speech, we have a problem with it.
It is for these reasons that the theme of our 2017 anthology is defiance/rebellion/resistance/revolution. We welcome previously unpublished poems, essays, short stories, hybrid/cross-genre pieces, art, or photographs -- fact or fiction, global or personal -- on the topic of defiance / rebellion / resistance / revolution. The only major guideline is that your submission be on this topic, be riveting, and be gorgeously written.
But here are some additional things you need to know:
Poetry: Submit up to 5 poems in one Word document. There is no minimum, but 5 is the maximum.
Imagery: Submit up to 5 images as .jpg attachments. Artists should know that their work will be printed in black-and-white.
Prose: Submit up to 10 pages of prose (essay, short story, flash fiction, personal reflection, etc.) in one Word document. This could be one 10-page piece or multiple shorter pieces.
Deadline: February 14, 2017 Payment: One copy of the anthology Distribution: Amazon, Etsy, Berl's Brooklyn Poetry Shop and other independent bookstores around the country
Submit your work to [email protected]. Put your last name followed by the word "DEFY!" in the subject line of the email, e.g. Smith - DEFY!
Due to the number of submissions we receive, submissions that do not follow these guidelines will be immediately rejected.
A portion of sales will be donated to Southern Poverty Law Center to support its mission of "fighting hatred and bigotry and to seeking justice for the most vulnerable members of our society."
