i think the crossroads are more about the illusion of choice. doesn't matter what direction you go; the path each way is predetermined. it all would have led to the same place anyway. whether you went right or left, whichever tunnel you chose in the water. it's about leading you to the end and letting you look back on it all and see a thousand places you could have made a different choice but this is the only ending you reached. it's the only one you ever would have reached.
going left is a common trick for navigating a maze. follow the left wall. but that trick also exists in mirror, always turning right. what matters is picking a direction and committing. but both tricks would land you in the same place.
a maze only has one exit.
