Fellow desi kids, I am not the only person who thinks Kal Ho Na Ho is problematic in the sense that everyone around Naina doesn’t let her have agency regarding what she wants to do in terms of her love life, right? Aman constantly interfering, Rohit going along with it, her entire family pushing her for marriage - it all just felt very messed up to me.

I can understand her grandmother being like this, but the rest of the characters also acting like Naina had to be married off ASAP was weird to me. Coming from Aman and Rohit, it was extra weird because they KNEW Naina loved Aman and was heartbroken about not being able to be with him. I do not understand why she had to be manipulated and emotionally blackmailed all the way to the mandap like this. Like, Aman could die and Naina could grieve him and do with her life what she wanted later. What is the hurry? The entire time I spend watching the movie I just see a young woman being pushed to do these things and how distressed she is, and it angers me to no end when it is touted as this amazing, heartfelt love story. Rohit wanting Naina in spite of her loving Aman also doesn’t make him magnanimous or whatever, and it doesn’t necessarily mean Naina has to give in to him. It is Aman’s mentality that is like this and I don’t see why we need to buy into it.

the fun thing about kal Ho Na ho is that Aman has no idea Rohit also loves him, absolutely none. the thing about Rohit is that for all that he's a little slow he's the only one with a full picture of anything that's actually going On. and he's deeply resigned to it bc he's grieving also in a way no one expects of him. Naina is so wrapped up in her own grief she doesn't realise until she sees rohit, so quick to touch and to hold, not know how to touch Aman on his literal deathbed. the second Rohit realised he also loves Aman, he sees exactly how this is going to go and end. imagine Rohit pleading with Aman in Naina's name for months. imagine Rohit only ever begging aman to stay, for him this time, in that hospital room. just once. think of Naina, who learns to fall apart alongside someone this time. to not be isolated in her grief
