DnD Shorts #1
So, I was DMing my friends and it was their first time playing DnD. We decided to use critical roll effect tables in combat to make it more interesting. Basically, if you roll a 1, it makes the fail even worse and if you roll a 20, it makes the success epic.
The party consisted of a human wizard, a tiefling rogue, a tiefling bard, a high elf druid and a half-orc fighter. They were following a trail in the woods and from some distance they successfully spotted some clockwork creatures. Wizard and bard took cover behind some trees and kept the distance, fighter stealthily approached for a melee attack, rogue and druid decided to climb the trees to make a ranged attack.
The combat started. Everyone took their actions and then there was Egolas, the high elf druid standing on the tree branch. He decided to attack with a Firebolt spell. He rolled a 1 in his first attack in his first combat. We laughed and rolled for the critical fail effect table. Then it was the second round and he decided to attack with an Ice Knife spell this time. Guess what? He rolled a 1.
A cool fight happened for the rest of the party. Meanwhile in the background, some tree exploded, covering the leaves with dense smoke and then, Egolas the arrogant high elf was flying 15 ft. backwards in the air, leaving a trail of smoke as falling on his butt. He stood up as if such thing never happened, cleaned the dirt on his clothes, looked around to see if anyone saw him. After the combat, he joined the others in absolute ignorence and said,
"Oh, I handled the ones in the back, did you handle the others?"
We stopped the session and laughed for ten straight minutes.
