I just finished watching succession and I’ve loved the two romantic relationships that Roman has throughout the show with Tabitha and Gerri. The dynamics are so different but I found myself rooting for both of these relationships. Gerri seems to have a better understanding of Roman’s character and the circumstances that shaped him because of how closely connected she is to Logan’s world and while that makes their bond so special because Roman allows himself to actually rely on someone and trust them that close connection to Logan’s world is ultimately what makes their relationship fail. That scene where Roman finally sees where her priorities lie when he begs her to help him and his siblings is arguably the most heartbreaking scene of the show.

It’s sad because she has so much context because she’s part of this system that Roman’s life has always revolved around but she’s too attached to that system for them to ever stand a chance.

Logan’s death is such a pivotal moment in his children’s lives because it frees them from the cage they’ve been trapped in their entire lives or at least it’s what offers them a way out of that cage if they chose to follow it.

That scene where Roman breaks at the funeral is so cathartic because it hopefully signifies the beginning of a healing journey and a life where his world no longer revolves around his abuser and his empire and unfortunately Gerri is part of that world.

I still think that their relationship is incredibly important to Roman’s journey of becoming his own person because he allows a level of vulnerability with her that he doesn’t show anyone else and I love them to bits and even think there’s a small chance their relationship might not be over after the end of the show but I somehow can’t see them being endgame because it feels like it’s essential for Roman to cut ties with his fathers circle.

Which being me to his relationship with Tabitha which is almost the polar opposite of his relationship with Gerri because she is that breath of much needed fresh air that lets Roman step outside of his fathers orbit but unlike Gerri Tabitha is not privy to the world that has shaped Roman and his abilities to trust people and because Roman doesn’t have the means to communicate that and let her in she stays on the outside and is unable to understand him.

But despite that she seems to value him and their personalities mesh so well together with them both saying the most out of pocket things out loud and Roman seems to be so at ease with her. I loved them as a couple
