I hate that romance always gets a bad rep. In real life, for the most part, couples make me cringe, but in my novels.. I’m always cheering for the happily-ever-after the characters I love deserve. I love that one of my favorite genres tells us amazing men are out there (on the pages in a fictional realm), and that women should feel empowered. So.. stop talking smack about romance, or referring to these books as “porn”.. because they’re so much more than you can imagine. . . . Book Boyfriends are alpha in only the best ways. I watched it and actually had tears come to my eyes. Some make the argument that romance novels perpetuating unrealistic expectations for men. All alpha all the time. Dominant. Always buff & tall & "manly". What do we think of this as readers? Obviously we know the difference between reality and fiction, but do these representations of men skew our view of men in the real world without our even realizing it? Could we do a better job of writing and reading about a wider variety of men or do we choose our books specifically because we want to avoid the average man? Also, how many romance novels have you read where the hero isn't an alpha male? One of my favorite reads is one by Nora Roberts in her Bridal Quartet series where the main hero Carter is a quiet, introspective high school teacher who stumbles his way through interactions with our heroine Mac. A far cry from the usual confident alpha.
